Going through my original notes for the Gypsum debut and I likened listening through the record to recent experiences with the Lauren Lakis album as well as a feel of early dredg. Which is true to an extent but the record is also an all around head trip, filled with a wondrously whimsical tone and a kind of wizardry in regards to the songwriting strength and sonic world building.

Over the years, We Are Scientists has gradually morphed from these interesting Indie darlings to a bombastic sonic tour-de-force. On their latest, Huffy, We Are Scientists harness the burgeoning energy that started during 2016’s Helter Seltzer to conjure up one of their most massive sounding records to date with powerful performance prowess shining as much as the sanguine sonic storytelling.

We don’t mean to let things fall by the wayside but that’s precisely what happens when one is constantly bombarded with killer music. And we’re not complaining by any means just explaining that, despite our best efforts and constant reminders on our always full ‘to-do’ list, sometimes something we really wanna feature gets put off for far too long. Like the latest from Boston’s Jim Healey. And we’re genuinely sorry for that. Because you should definitely be checking this one out!

I need a court stenographer-type person to go back through older posts to see if I already declared something else as our favorite Metal record of the year because I don’t wanna stick my foot in my mouth when I declare that HIPPOTRAKTOR is that fresh kind of Metal that we constantly yearn for that’s heady, heavy, underivative, and, yep, kind of our current favorite record in that aforementioned genre starting with a capital “M”.

Post-Trump and the world is still in chaos, overrun by a virus that’s seemingly never going away due to a continuing campaign of disinformation and morons in general perpetuating lies and ridiculousness. Sounds like the perfect time for Ministry to come out of hibernation, yeah? It may have been Trump who initially lit a brand new fire under Uncle Al’s ass but it seems like the ensuing daily deluge of dumpster fires has been the catalyst to one of the most interesting and innovative Ministry releases of the 21st Century.

It’s never too early to start planning the following year’s “Most Anticipated” list especially when news comes that an artist responsible for one of our most favorite’s of the previous year is back with what’s sure to be another banger.
[Read more…]Singles! Professional Murder Music, “All Comes Down”
I had this whole spiel planned about my history of discovering Professional Murder Music from reading all about the Electro-Industrial marvels in Rawk rags (Kerrang! especially) back in the days where the interwebs weren’t the be all/end all for information to the first taste when “Slow” dropped on the End Of Days soundtrack to scooping up every little sampler I could find to the holy grail itself: an advance promo of debut record in a used record shop of all places a bit before the self-titled was finally released. But I’m not going to do that today (Or maybe I already did???) because we’re in the here and now and it gives me so much joy to be able to write about NEW (ish) Professional Murder Music over twenty years after first opening my ears to the Los Angeles-based outfit.

Well, hot dang! The Shirts And Shoes are not effing around on Sinner Swing, their latest offering, which comes out of the gates, ahem, swinging big with eight seemingly unsuspecting songs that, when combined, create a sure contender for “Best Rawk Album of 2021”. A veritable treasure trove of tumultuous tracks, Sinner Swing evokes feelings so intense that they’re practically palpable so strap in and get comfortable because The Shirts And Shoes has returned and it’s sure to be a bumpy ride!

I tend to avoid reviews of any sort upon a release date passing because who needs my opinion when you can make one yourself with the materials literally in the palm of your hand in most cases. However, in some cases like with this post, a track or body of music just yearns to be augmented a little more amongst the vast amount of music being perpetually amplified into your earholes. Like the latest from Combichrist which, I think, is one of the best pieces of modern Electro that the Aggrotech titans have been associated with in probably a decade or so.

Combining Space Rawk with elements of Prog as well as Goth and Post-everything tendencies, Lehnen create entire universes within each of the ten tracks presented here on their fourth full-length Negative Space. With their latest opus, words like expansive and epic can barely contain the scope that Lehnen bring to the world of music on an album that’s powerful, poignant, and potentially your next favorite of 2021.
