So yeah, we may have already declared Cattle Decapitation’s latest to be our most favorite Metal record of the year but when it comes to sheer heaviness, Gozu might take the crown after the nine punishing (And creatively named) tracks they’re about to lay down for y’all throughout latest album Remedy.

Subscribing to the absence makes the heart grow fonder school of thought regarding their release schedule, blindspot may not be putting out stuff incessantly…. but when they do, you can be sure that it’s an event you need to pay attention to.

The Rock & Roll Rumble continues to provide. They say it’s a place where you can find your new favorite band… or maybe your new favorite band finds you? And maybe they’re not even a part of The Rumble this year but seek you out because you covered a LOT of it… and holy hell is this a long, convoluted intro to tell you that The Downhauls is a band you need to have in your life.

More like how can we resist this song??? The Chelsea Curve’s latest single, the first in a series of tracks leading to a new EP due in the fall, is instantly infectious infusing their Mod sensibilities with a Pop sheen akin to The Go-Go’s at times for a memorable romp that’s sure to be a live staple for years to come.

“It’s not a competition, it’s a celebration!”
Helen McWIliams, vocalist and rhythm guitarist for eventual 2023 NEW CHAMP One Fall, probably summed up the entirety of this year’s Rock & Roll Rumble the best during their crown (And crowd) winning set on Saturday evening in front of a packed house at Sonia on Night 9 of 9 of the Rumble’s triumphant return.

Our most favorite Metal Record of 2023 has arrived?!?!? Too soon??? We don’t think so, especially when you get a chance to hear Cattle Decapitation’s Terrasite in full. It’s big, bad, and beautiful and hones in on the ever evolving sound of the San Diego quintet oh so exquisitely. We had been blasting first single “We Eat Our Young” pretty much daily since it dropped and the fact that’s it yet to get old even when listening to it within the album over and over and over some more is a huge tell for us about the longevity of both the track and the album.

“Evil Never Goes Away”
So says an ominous voiceover at the start of director Denis Sobolev’s In A Dark, Dark Room and over the course of the film you’ll see exactly what evil can do tempting both innocent and not so innocent folks in a small provincial town near the capital with their wildest dreams. Like Weird Science if the teens decided to go the witch route instead of Frankenstein, the new Ukrainian film from Sobolev is an interesting entry into the witchcraft genre.

“A Transgender & Queer Film By Alice Maio Mackay” is really the only thing we needed to read for us to dive headfirst into the latest from the So Vam director with barely a plot revealed. T-Blockers is a delightful Queer empowering film that simultaneously denounces and stands up to bigotry with some powerful statements throughout on the current state of the world voiced by some richly crafted characters from Mackay and Benjamin Pahl Johnson (Give writers all the monies!!!!)

We’ve gotten to the point with our Salem Horror Fest coverage where we find ourselves questioning what should go into a great film review? Do you want the entire plot spoiled for you so as to highlight how clever certain moments are or do you keep it vague and general? Especially with Stag from director and writer Alexandra Spieth and its’ slow build to big reveals. We’ll keep it contained for now because who doesn’t like a surprise or two or three?

From the trailer, we pegged Dane Elcar’s Brightwood as Open Water meets Friday The 13th and we’ve never been more psyched to be pretty much entirely wrong in our initial assumption. Sure, Brightwood takes place in a solitary wooded location with an annoying couple at its’ center (We’ll get to that) but unlike that Indie shark flick at least, as you get deeper into the film you’ll find that you actually don’t want to root for the shark/antagonist to devour your main characters here after all.
