There are a few artists that I’ve reviewed here, and I’ve mentioned this before, that just kind of fall off my radar after their record of the moment is out and available. Not for lack of liking but more the abundance of new music coming in on the daily. But then I get a ping as something new from the artist is about to drop and get to give myself a refresher and dive back into their old stuff for research, nostalgia, and the inevitable comparison or two.

Any fan of Goth, Industrial, Electro, and Darkwave who has yet to check out recent outings from Gary Numan should hand in their membership card this instant. We’re about twenty years into Numan V.2 which began in 2000 with the release of Pure (Or with more regularity in releases since 2006’s Jagged) and since then, the legendary innovator and artist has continually gotten better and better, not only adding to his already impressive legacy with the the newer material but perhaps, just perhaps, exceeding it.

While Underwing might already be the Desert Rawk, Grunge, Prog hybrid you didn’t know you needed in your life, they might also be onto something wholly original with their unique blending and melding of styles. Listening through “House On Fire”, their latest single and video, and the only artist that remotely comes close to what they’re doing is He Is Legend…and that only holds true for bits and pieces of the track. But whatever genre you’d like to tie them down to, there’s no denying that what Underwing has created here is undeniably infectious and persistently timeless.

As we’ve said in the past, cover albums in general are hit or miss. Give Monster Magnet the reins on one, though, and watch out! A Better Dystopia, the upcoming covers collection from New Jersey’s real favorite sons, sees Monster Magnet at their absolute gnarliest and Psych Rawk best throughout 13 tracks that sounds more like the latest Monster Magnet banger than a consistent nod to the past.

Nobody really does driving anthems theses days. Sure, there’s bands like Foo Fighters putting out Pop puff disguised as Rawk but where is the new Springsteen? Gaslight Anthem? Against Me!? Bueller??? Hopefully the UK’s Suspects can rectify this gross negligence in the current music community with “The Mental Health Act”, the title track from their forthcoming new EP. Because it’s huge. And anthem driven. And just what we all needed.

The Distinguished Order Of Disobedience or The D.O.O.D. as they’re more elegantly referred to deliver one powerful punch with their latest single, “Kill The Light”. Taking cues from Pist. On’s accessible Hardcore sensibilities, Texas Hippie Coalition’s driving sonic anthems, and the ferocity from Goth heavies Dead Girls Corp and Rob Zombie at his Electro best (Think anything off Hellbilly Deluxe or White Zombie’s “The One”), The D.O.O.D. is a melting pot of killer styles and sounds with barely any genre being able to contain what this sextet bring to the table.

I put EGGVN in the same realm of Strvngers not only because they both sport a random “V” in place of a vowel in their name but also due the tone and intent of their sonic messages. They’re both modern Darkwave darlings in these offices but today we’re taking a deeper look into EGGVN and their latest which embraces the almighty heaviness alongside the synthetic backdrop.

Sumo Cyco is the sound of No Doubt fronted by Tairrie B. They’re heavy, they’re trendy, they’re genre-bending yet accessible and on Initiation, the Canadian quartet create the definitive Sumo Cyco album that cuts to the core of who they are and streamline their sound to bring listeners their best release yet.

It’s hard to put into words the sounds that are coming out of my speakers when Kataan is playing. It’s this unholy union of Black Metal and Thrash and Post-something that’s just devilishly divine. Featuring Nick Thornbury of Vattnet Viskar and Brett Boland of Astronoid, Kataan does the New England heavy music scene proud with a debut release that’s short and anything but sweet.
