Lowell’s own Fatigue continues to impress. A veritable sonic chameleon, the Darkwave/Electro hybrid’s lush sound expands far beyond simply just one or two genres especially on latest single “Hush” which sees the local outfit flourishing when faced with a strategic sonic shift.

“Listen at your own risk!” might be the final line uttered by Tairrie B. Murphy at the conclusion of the debut single from new outfit SWTEVL (Pronounced “Sweet Evil”) but the only risk we can envision is listeners missing out by not taking a chance on the righteous Rawk flowing out of the speakers when “Hellzapoppin'” is on!
[Read more…]Singles! Ex-Hyena, “In Slow Motion”
We don’t listen to Ex-Hyena nearly as much as we should and latest single, “In Slow Motion”, is a glaring reminder of that fact. A Gothic Electro burner in the vein of The Faint’s early work with sweeping old school ’80’s New Wave tendencies, the newest from Reuben Bettsak and Bo Barringer is a synthetic symphony through and through.

Once we discover a new band, barring some kind of disastrous/monumental change in sound, we’re usually fans for life. Maybe that’s the comic nerd/collector/completist in us but loyalty is a thing we believe in. Just don’t be trash bag humans and stay true to yourselves in the tunes, okay? Like Parts Per Million. A band we didn’t even actually witness at this year’s Rock & Roll Rumble but still covered, Parts Per Million still managed to leave an impression solely from 2022’s The Cycle (“Undead” and “Placebo” regularly gets stuck in our head) so of course we’re going to jump all over any new music coming following that.

We love us some Electro around the RNRF offices. We especially love the kind of Electro that not only begs repeated listens but also benefits from repeated listens and in the case of “SAINT.EXE” from Providence’s own CARV.R, it’s that kind of Electro.

Smitt E. Smitty & The Fezztones’ last banger/earworm (“Buzzkill Baby”, go get yourself obsessed here) was one that we really, really, REALLY wanted to cover but just missed our window of opportunity so when the newest slab of what we assumed would be some more sonic gold dropped in ye olde digital inbox, we were bound and determined not to miss out again.

Only in MA could we have a band from Salem release a song called “California” on Friday the 13th during Spooky Season. Maybe that’s because because in October, the Witchy City does what what it wants??? And that’s okay by us especially when Radio Compass’ latest single, and first since the Aloha LP released last year, is as infectious as “California” is!
[Read more…]Singles! Already Dead, “Landlord”
We don’t think Boston’s Already Dead is getting enough credit in terms of their anthem-making ability. But maybe latest single, “Landlord”, will change all that as bandleader Dan Cummings lays down the sweet guitar, piano, and harmonica sounds that, when coupled with his gruff yet glowing vocal delivery, envelopes ye olde earholes like a warm blanket.
[Read more…]Singles! Not Bad Not Well, “New Way Out”
We’ll be honest: We were pretty blown away by Not Bad Not Well when we were researching the 2023 edition of the Rock & Roll Rumble and then became even more so after witnessing the live show. That said, like many fans of the band made from those shows we’ve been frothing at the mouth for new music beyond their lone single up until that point (“Sleeper” which you can read about here). And new music is finally here in the form of “New Way Out”!

Surely you’ve heard Calculating the Angle of Our Descent from former Mistle Thrush vocalist Valerie Forgione as Lovina Falls now, right? Well, what are you waiting for??? For those who are already well-versed in the debut solo record from Forgione that was released earlier this year, you’ll no doubt be ecstatic to hear that “Vaulted” from the record is following “On Your Side” with a video treatment of its’ own once again from director Joan Hathaway. And for the rest of y’all, here’s your chance to get on the right side of aural history.
