“I quarantined my ass off during a global pandemic and all I got was a SOM EP!”

Instead of boasting on the fact that we’ve yet to review an Evergrey record despite attempting to on multiple occasions, howzabout we just call an audible and start over? That said, clean slate initiative engaged! So yeah, Evergrey has been around for some time and is still one of Sweden’s Premier Progressive Power Metal outfits. If you’ve heard any of the eleven records that’ve come before then you’d know that fact to be true. Also true is that almost thirty years into their career and with album number twelve lurking on the horizon, Evergrey sound as vital and relevant as, ahem, ever especially on Escape Of The Phoenix.

We’ve been known to be a sucker for marketing from time to time and, as our former header “What’s In A Name?” can attest to, a flashy band handle occasionally as well. That said, nothing gets more flashier than a name like “Messiahvore” which is the nom de plume for a Denver quartet who make some mighty monolithic music that lives up to that mega moniker all throughout their monstrous debut.

More often than not, and I’m pretty sure I’ve said this here before, if a record is out or I just miss when it streams early for the music buying/listening public then I’ll typically scrap any review plans I may or may not have had…because once it’s out there, what does anyone need my opinion for???

What an interesting record.
And that was all that was written in regards to Not A Game by Practice upon an initial listen through late last year. And it still holds true. Michael Tapper, the man behind the beats of so many modern marvels like Spill Gold, Bishop Allen and We Are Scientists to name a few is standing alone in the spotlight as Practice and the resulting debut full-length is everything you’d expect from a man with a resume like that and then some.

It’s rare in this day and age that you get excited each and every time an artist you dig puts out something new. I mean, everyone goes through ups and downs, peaks and valleys but sometimes, just sometimes, you find an artist that just hits that mark every single time so that when nary a note is heard from an impending new opus you can’t help but feel giddy.

I’m a late-to-the-party metalhead, okay? As in started my Thrash education with …And Justice For All and Countdown To Extinction kind of late. But from there, I went back and discovered the rich history of the genre and opened my ears to the outliers like Testament, Flotsam & Jetsam, and the band of the hour in this particular piece, Sacred Reich. I fell in love with the Phoenix-based outfit because of 1993’s Independent which is still beautifully brutal as much as it is lyrically potent and poignant.

The Neverlutionaries in a nutshell is the more accessible aspects of Alice In Chains’ brand of Grunge, the Funk-driven Rawk of Living Colour with hints of Chuck Moseley and Reverend & The Makers in the vocal department making for the most wonderful musical melting pot on their self-titled debut.

I’ll be honest, I got way too excited when this bad boy popped up in my inbox. Hearing “Kings Before You” when it was initially unveiled late last year was kind of a revelation. Sure, James Durbin was always the “rocker” when featured on American Idol but saying that on the show and actually being one are two different beasts completely…but here, with The Beast Awakens, the former Idol contestant proves his mettle with some hearty METAL that’s sure to appease purists while treating his fanbase to a revelatory romp through the land of heavy Rawk and/or Roll!

Sometimes I get requests for coverage from artists I really dig but because of one thing or another, it gets put on the backburner. That’s not to say I forgot about it because I remember EVERYTHING but more that it goes to some dark corner of my head mush waiting for an ideal time to work it’s way back into the casual conversation that is our pseudo-regular posting schedule.
