Maybe in 2030 we’ll stop doing these lists featuring a number corresponding to the given year and make it a little easier for us but for now we’re still finding it hard to whittle down the artists and albums that kicked ass for us so if it ain’t broke then don’t fix it, y’know? And 2022 delivered yet again!

This is it! The one you’ve been waiting for. Forget all other artists because BAIT is here with your most favorite debut of 2022 (Aside from labelmates A Cause In Distress at least). The brainchild of ex-Baddies vocalist Michael Webster and accompanied by former bandmate Jim Webster along with Luke Branch and MRE (Who also produced the record), Sea Change is an anxiety-ridden journey told in 10 parts. If any record captures the feel of uncertainty that the last 2 years has wrought it’s this one with even the recording lending itself to the atmosphere and opting (Mostly out of necessity) for more remote and separate sessions to capture it all.

It’s almost here! The new full-length from BAIT may be right around the corner (April 1st to be exact) but that doesn’t mean that the Southend outfit can’t roll out one more song to whet our appetites a little bit more, right?

It’s so funny to me that a regular annual column for a blog I used to write for (“I Read AP’s 100 Bands You Need To Know In ____ So You Don’t Have To” over on Pop!Blerd which you can read here) over 10 years ago led me to Baddies which led me to Michael Webster which led to BAIT (And eventually Cool Thing Records who have yet to disappoint in the new music department). Life’s funny that way.

Is 2022 the year of BAIT?!?! Gahd, we hope so. Michael Webster is back with an aural attack that’s even more visceral and in-your-face than anything found on the last BAIT outing in 2017 (Or the singles that followed, which we’ve reviewed, since). And if “DRAMA DRAMA DRAMA DRAMA” is a sign of what’s to come on their upcoming new full-length (Sea Change, out April 1st on Cool Thing Records), then the whole of the music world are in for quite the sonic treat.

I don’t why I thought it’d be a good idea to do both an end of the year list and preview list reflecting the year they’re happening in….but here we are. Our list of twenty one albums and change has already posted (Which you can read here) so now it’s time to close the book on 2021 and look to the future with 22 albums we think will make this year sound even better than the last…and change.

BAIT is back with “DLP” and an accompanying video that sees mainman Michael Webster dressed in black and hiding eyes that, when revealed, turn Webster into the latest badass Doctor Who villain. You’ll agree when you see it, too.

It’s that time of the year again! A time of reflection! A time of typing! A time of regretting the decision to pick the amount of best albums based on what year it is.

RIP Baddies, Long Live BAIT!
Back in the day (And on another blog), I used to do an annual post basically ripping apart Alternative Press’s “100 Bands You Need To Hear In _____” issue. Maybe ripped apart is a bit harsh so let’s say pointed out which of those 100 bands featured actually deserved some attention. Diamonds in the rough, if you will! [Read more…]
