The kind of music that Carissa Johnson creates is tantamount to the term “timeless”. Whether it’s last year’s “Congratulations” single, a guest spot on Linnea’s Garden track “In The City”, or the L’Heure Bleu, After Dark EP, there’s just something endearing in the chameleonic way that Johnson adapts and evolves with each release. And latest track “I Surrender” is no different.

We keep a running list of records that release throughout a given year that strike some kind of chord with us so that we don’t get overwhelmed when it comes to whittling down faves for our inevitable year-end list. Sometimes, on very rare occasions, we add a band to that list before an album even drops because we have faith in that artist while on other occasions an advance single is so strong that we can’t imagine not loving what’s to come. Boston’s Blood Lightning falls into the latter category as “Blankets” got many a spin over a plethora of different streaming platforms from us and now that we have the rest from the supergroup’s debut in house we don’t feel bad about patting ourselves on the back over that early prediction.

It must be something in the air (Or maybe something in that “Dirty Water”?) because it seems to us like there’s a wealth of acton starting up again from a lot of the artists featured in this year’s Rock & Roll Rumble. To name a few, Paper Tigers just dropped a new single ahead of an upcoming full-length, Kooked Out just unveiled a cassette version of their most recent record, and soon Gretchen Shae and the Middle Eight will be dropping a brand new track. Which brings us to another entrant in the 2023 Rumble, Bird Language, who return with their latest single and another fitting end-of-summer jam for our collective earholes.

My first taste of Led Zeppelin’s “No Quarter”, believe it or not, was the Crowbar version which graced their self-titled record in 1993. That said, I’m obviously a huge Led Zeppelin fan.
But I digress.

Remember when it was okay to smile…or when something just made you feel really happy? Music does that for me constantly even through all of the current lunacy in the world and it’s artists like Carissa Johnson who keep giving me reasons to turn that perennial frown upside down.

Fans can thank The Cure-Alls’ guitarist Steph Curran and Johnson’s own cat, Ginger, for this rockin’ little ditty that’s just the latest in a slew of excellent new singles released since Talk Talk Talk dropped in 2018. Originally slated to be on an upcoming acoustic album by Johnson, the track was reconstructed after Curran heard it and recommended an alternate version for the full band. Ginger comes into play as the content of the song delves into life on the road and a yearning for stability.

“The most important part of Motherboar, in my opinion, is that we don’t take ourselves or our music too seriously. We just want to go out, melt faces and have a blast in the process….oh, and spit beer on people sometimes.”
