There are desert island discs and there are desert island bands. The difference? Longevity. Sure, those albums are going to appease you for the rest of your unfortunate life on the island but the band itself? That’s the one that will really sustain you. Sure, sometimes they overlap but more often than not they do not. [Read more…]
Pulp Rawk: Small Victories: The True Story Of Faith No More By Adrian Harte
The press release for Small Victories: The True Story Of Faith No More is quick to point out that, although the book isn’t an “official” biography of the band, it is endorsed by them going so far as to tout a quote from co-founder and bassist Bill Gould regarding the book and its’ author, Adrian Harte: “It’s a quality piece. The man has done his research, and it shows. It provided me with more than a few revelations… and I’m in the band.” [Read more…]
Salem Wolves Shimmy And Shake Out Of Summer With Scorcher Of An Album
I wish I could say that Massachusetts-based bands continually surprise me with their excellence but, at this point, I kind of expect it. So when a close friend and local musical guru posts a link to a band around these parts that I don’t already know about then I already have expectations. Luckily, Salem Wolves is another one of those MA bands that just brings it and their latest, Shake, is the proof in the pudding. [Read more…]
Morne Create A Maelstrom Of Metal Awesome On Blistering To The Night Unknown
“Doom done right”. That should be the tagline attached to Morne’s To The Night Unknown. Heavy and bristling with intensity, the latest (Their fourth, actually) album from the Boston behemoths is a slick metallic collection of tracks destined to seep into your consciousness and bite at your very soul! In a good way. [Read more…]
Modern Mimes Preview Next Full-Length With New Single “Stare”
I became aware of Fort Lauderdale’s Modern Mimes after their cover of Type O Negative’s “I Don’t Wanna Be Me” was released and, quite frankly, was pretty blown away. As a tattoo-emblazoned, TON-loving uber fan (As in, bought the Playgirl and had it signed…or bought tickets at a far away outdoor amphitheater to see them despite the set being just an opening slot for Queensryche) I was impressed not only because it takes some chutzpah to cover Type O in the first place but then to take on one of the “modern” tracks to boot? Get outta here! But they did it justice and managed to elevate it beyond the original. [Read more…]
PIG Meets Sasha Grey, Covers KC & the Sunshine Band. Because Why Not.
One day soon I hope to run across some newer <PIG> fans and, like a crotchety old man of 40, spew off lines like: “You kids have it so easy! Back in my day, Raymond Watts waited a decade between albums! And when he did release records it was only in Japan! Before Amazon! And the internets!” Seriously though, and unlike a crotchety old man of my age, I feel blessed to live in this wondrous time where Watts has rediscovered the fire and has re-emerged with a (seemingly) untapped well of new material. [Read more…]
Downpour Is Massachusetts Metal At Its’ Finest
Brian Fair is a beast on vocals and Derek Kerswill is a godsend behind the drumkit. Don’t believe me? Then just press “play” on “Astral Projection” off of Downpour’s long-in-development metal masterpiece of a debut which is finally seeng the light of day this September and tell me I’m wrong. [Read more…]
Nonpoint Celebrate Longevity On Triumphantly Heavy X
Holy jeebus, if Nonpoint is really celebrating 20 years as an entity then that means…I’m old?!?!
But I digress. [Read more…]
Mountain Tamer Do Psychedelia Proud On Fuzzed Out Godfortune Dark Matters
A truly unholy album worthy of all the worshipping adjectives and curse words that will undoubtedly be hurled at it once it’s unveiled to the masses in full, Godfortune Dark Matters by Mountain Tamer is a gorgeous slab of glistening psychedelic sludge that’s as gruesome as it is groovy.
Phew! That was a mouthful!
But I digress. [Read more…]
Night Club Offers The Perfect Soundtrack To The Times On Aptly Titled Scary World
Night Club is one of those bands that I felt I just missed the bus with. I received a press release for their most recent single in advance of some live dates with Combichrist and I’ll admit, I was intrigued. But I just missed the mark with coverage save for a few advance notices on our Facebook page and a rave or two after the fact.
Lucky me, and you, because Night Club ain’t done with us yet as a new album is almost here and offers us a chance to redeem ourselves and regale you readers with why you should really pay attention this time.
But I digress. [Read more…]
