There’s something astoundingly familiar about Welles’ Red Trees and White Trashes. Like this delightful hybrid of Neutral Milk Hotel and Queens of the Stone Age, the kind of music found within is this truly great sonic journey that treks through Americana with a sort of fuzzed out folk complete with electric bluesy styles and big beats. [Read more…]
The Black Queen Skillfully Synthesize Sexy And Solemn Sounds On Sophomore Opus Infinite Games
I’ve always thought that Greg Puciato had a beautiful voice. Yeah, I said it! While most gravitated towards his heavier works in Dillinger Escape Plan, I tended to latch onto the more melodic turns like “Black Bubblegum” or his more alternative turns in Killer Be Killed or Spylacopa. In other words, The Black Queen is like a dream come true for me. [Read more…]
T-Tops Do Old School Noise Rawk Right On Disease
Currently in alphabetical order in my Itunes library, the latest from T-Tops leads right into Tad’s Inhaler and the flow is pretty seamless because the kind of Post-punk, fuzzed out noise rawk with a raving madman at the mic that T-Tops currently create is just the kind of magic that made an underrated band like those Seattle grungesters stand out back in their day. [Read more…]
Steven Page Readies Rollicking Discipline: Heal Thyself, Pt. II For Release, Plans Extensive North American Tour
Who’da thunk that the guy responsible for sweet songs from Thomas and the Magic Railroad and The Big Bang Theory and lines like “Chickity China the Chinese chicken/You have a drumstick and your brain stops tickin” that’ll forever be burned into the very being of every Gen X/Y something or other would be responsible for an album that’s part Devo meets The English Beat with some Elvis Costello thrown in for good measure? Because that’s what you get on Discipline: Heal Thyself, Pt. II. Yeah, I don’t believe it either [Read more…]
Super Sounds And Songs Abound On Super American’s Tequila Sunrise
Super American is one of those conundrums in a puzzle type bands where you think you’re getting one thing but what you’re really getting is another thing. And the “another thing” is the better thing overall. Confused? Let us explain. [Read more…]
Therapy? Bring The Fire On Incendiary Cleave
There are desert island discs and there are desert island bands. The difference? Longevity. Sure, those albums are going to appease you for the rest of your unfortunate life on the island but the band itself? That’s the one that will really sustain you. Sure, sometimes they overlap but more often than not they do not. [Read more…]
Pulp Rawk: Small Victories: The True Story Of Faith No More By Adrian Harte
The press release for Small Victories: The True Story Of Faith No More is quick to point out that, although the book isn’t an “official” biography of the band, it is endorsed by them going so far as to tout a quote from co-founder and bassist Bill Gould regarding the book and its’ author, Adrian Harte: “It’s a quality piece. The man has done his research, and it shows. It provided me with more than a few revelations… and I’m in the band.” [Read more…]
Salem Wolves Shimmy And Shake Out Of Summer With Scorcher Of An Album
I wish I could say that Massachusetts-based bands continually surprise me with their excellence but, at this point, I kind of expect it. So when a close friend and local musical guru posts a link to a band around these parts that I don’t already know about then I already have expectations. Luckily, Salem Wolves is another one of those MA bands that just brings it and their latest, Shake, is the proof in the pudding. [Read more…]
Morne Create A Maelstrom Of Metal Awesome On Blistering To The Night Unknown
“Doom done right”. That should be the tagline attached to Morne’s To The Night Unknown. Heavy and bristling with intensity, the latest (Their fourth, actually) album from the Boston behemoths is a slick metallic collection of tracks destined to seep into your consciousness and bite at your very soul! In a good way. [Read more…]
Modern Mimes Preview Next Full-Length With New Single “Stare”
I became aware of Fort Lauderdale’s Modern Mimes after their cover of Type O Negative’s “I Don’t Wanna Be Me” was released and, quite frankly, was pretty blown away. As a tattoo-emblazoned, TON-loving uber fan (As in, bought the Playgirl and had it signed…or bought tickets at a far away outdoor amphitheater to see them despite the set being just an opening slot for Queensryche) I was impressed not only because it takes some chutzpah to cover Type O in the first place but then to take on one of the “modern” tracks to boot? Get outta here! But they did it justice and managed to elevate it beyond the original. [Read more…]
