Lovelorn is one of those artists where, after the first single was released in waaaaay back 2020, we found ourselves constantly refreshing ye olde Inbox waiting for what was coming next. Learning that the group was comprised of former members of Creepoid only made the anticipation/impatience grow stronger and we’re happy to report that the end result is simply marvelous. Beyond reproach even! The most precious debut you’ll cradle in your paws this year!
But I digress!
Leaps and bounds away from the Alternative Americana produced by Creepoid, Anna and Patrick Troxell’s new outfit is a dazzling, daring, and defiant slab of current Electro that’s like Mazzy Star mixing it up with The Faint offshoot, Closeness. Kooky, crafty, yet definitely cohesive, What’s Yr Damage is a smoldering statement of intent that shimmers and shines straight through to the last chord struck on “Tiger” which ends this ferocious futuristic foray into modern Electro.
“Fight Or Flight” is dreamy yet charges in, dangling a sonic carrot of what’s to come and what’s to come is “Sickness Or Reward” which slays, thumping and throbbing to and fro with Anna’s voice reverberating to mesh with this wall of synth to create an unholy hum. “Reason” is reminiscent of Corlyx with an overall Electro Goth feel, “Leaps & Bounds” is all grooves and gargantuan beats with Patrick taking over lead vox for a spell, and “Get A Job” screeches and whines to life with Anna’s mechanically-tinged voice accenting the unnerving drone that ferments below. In a fun way.
“Hole In Yr Soul” delivers a tantalizing triumph that has Patrick and Anna trading verses on a massive mammer jammer that epitomizes the absolute pinnacle of Lovelorn righteousness while “Around You” is a bass-heavy mesmerizing bout of scintillating synth as Anna and Patrick’s voices sync in this most perfect harmonious unison. Later on, “Be Mind” is loopy and lavish before “Tiger” brings it all back with a succinct sonic soliloquy that dives deep into Post-Rawk Alternative on a closing number that’s foreboding yet fun and in the vein of Sisters Of Mercy meeting The Soft Moon
What’s Yr Damage arrives through 6131 Records on August 6th. Pre-orders are up now and can be purchased when you head here. For the latest on Lovelorn, including dates where you can check them out live soon, head here, here, or here.
