We keep a running list of records that release throughout a given year that strike some kind of chord with us so that we don’t get overwhelmed when it comes to whittling down faves for our inevitable year-end list. Sometimes, on very rare occasions, we add a band to that list before an album even drops because we have faith in that artist while on other occasions an advance single is so strong that we can’t imagine not loving what’s to come. Boston’s Blood Lightning falls into the latter category as “Blankets” got many a spin over a plethora of different streaming platforms from us and now that we have the rest from the supergroup’s debut in house we don’t feel bad about patting ourselves on the back over that early prediction.[Read more…]
Holy Alice in Chains, Batman! From the man who’s helped bring such sonic ecstasy with acts like Shatner, Blood Lightning, and the Rock & Roll Rumble-winning Set Fire among others to your earholes comes Crawl Your Way Back, an EP unlike any other so far in the Jim Healey aural arsenal.[Read more…]
“It’s not a competition, it’s a celebration!”
Helen McWIliams, vocalist and rhythm guitarist for eventual 2023 NEW CHAMP One Fall, probably summed up the entirety of this year’s Rock & Roll Rumble the best during their crown (And crowd) winning set on Saturday evening in front of a packed house at Sonia on Night 9 of 9 of the Rumble’s triumphant return.[Read more…]
We don’t mean to let things fall by the wayside but that’s precisely what happens when one is constantly bombarded with killer music. And we’re not complaining by any means just explaining that, despite our best efforts and constant reminders on our always full ‘to-do’ list, sometimes something we really wanna feature gets put off for far too long. Amongst the many accolades that have already been heaped upon Boston’s Set Fire, it gives us great pleasure to begin this review adding “2019 Rock And Roll Rumble Winner” to that list. Set Fire is quickly becoming one of those local outfits that can do no wrong in our book. Take their latest EP, Prism, as a prime example. It was a surprise release (To us, at least) which already makes it stand out. Then you get an updated version of a track we already know (“Smoke Rolls” from Death Kiss Volume 2, read our review here), a killer new ditty (“A Mile Before Time”), AND it’s all topped off with a cover of an underrated Soundgarden classic (“Room A Thousand Years Wide”). What’s not to love?[Read more…]
So you get a bunch of local outfits, give them two hours to record a track and see what you get. Sounds like the next greatest installment of an MTV Real World-type show, right? Wrong! This is how the latest volume of Deathkiss came to fruition over at the now defunct EMF building. [Read more…]
