20 for ’20: An Exhausting List Of Our Favorite Music That Got Us Through A Truly Exhausting Year

It’s an understatement that 2020 was a pretty fucked up year, right? Machine Head was the last live band I saw back in February and a few days after that I found myself in an emergency room with some unexpected surgery to be had (Don’t worry, I’m fine now!) followed by the shutdown across the country. There’ve been ups, downs, and everything in between in 2020 but one constant has been the music. Artists have adapted with some keeping those schedules and releasing new albums despite not being able to tour behind them while others are holding off altogether. Some have done well with the new norm of livestreamed concerts and while I’ve checked out a few, personally they’re just not my cuppa.

If you were ever curious, I listen to EVERYTHING that comes across my virtual desk. Doesn’t matter if it’s a genre I’m particularly invested in because in the interest of remaining objective to all, I say “What the hell!” and give it a shot. That said, I think I like Psychobilly??? I really dug the latest offering from BAT! last year and damn if the eighth record from Canadian trio The Brains doesn’t give me the feels as it delivers the solid goods. It also helps that both The Brains and BAT! share members.

I don’t do Rockabilly or, more accurately here, Psychobilly. Actually, scratch that. I tend to gravitate towards sounds that move me in some sort of way regardless of genre. That said, and to clarify, I do not have an abundance of Rocka/Psychobilly in my current physical or digital collection of music. But being an Industrial/Goth kid, BAT! speaks to me. And considering they’re listed as “Gothabilly” with a sound like Misfits meeting Oingo Boingo, this outfit is the perfect blend for me. And you!
