You know what a bucket list band is, right? That band that you just NEED to see before you kick it. The discussion came up recently and while there are some that are definitely unattainable (Oingo Boingo, original Alice In Chains, Wall Of Voodoo), others might just happen (AC/DC) while in other cases it’s all about location, location, location (Will Haven sticking to the West Coast primarily, Earthtone9 sporadically playing Europe only).

There is no greater satisfaction than hearing a highly anticipated album for the first time and being reassured that your faith was rightly placed as said album is better than great, maybe better than the best the band has put out and, quite possibly, best of the year. And it’s only February.

Boston brings together a very diverse and eclectic collection of artists. On the one hand you have the heavier, sludgier, dirtier side of rawk which permeates the scene more dominantly but on the other side, you have these introspective artists who tend to get overlooked or overshadowed.

Take Boston’s Psychic Dog and Death From Above 1979 when they were making good tunez (Circa their debut in 2004) and you’ll have an inkling of what Nicholas Pentabona and Morgan Berns together as BEDTIMEMAGIC offer up to your earholes on the regular.

Set Fire is quickly becoming one of those local outfits that can do no wrong in our book. Take their latest EP, Prism, as a prime example. It was a surprise release (To us, at least) which already makes it stand out. Then you get an updated version of a track we already know (“Smoke Rolls” from Death Kiss Volume 2, read our review here), a killer new ditty (“A Mile Before Time”), AND it’s all topped off with a cover of an underrated Soundgarden classic (“Room A Thousand Years Wide”). What’s not to love?

Within Temptation is another one of those bands that has been on my radar for some time and I get the general gist of what they’re all about but never properly dove in before. And like so many times previously documented in these pages, I truly effed up. Especially if previous efforts sounded anything like Resist, Within Temptation’s seventh opus.

Is it too early to declare a body of music as a “must have” for the new year? If not, then I’d like to nominate Circus Trees. Since we debuted “Impermanence” over on the Deathkiss Radio Show on the now defunct WEMF last year, Malborough’s sibling triple threat has been playing out and honing their talent in preparation for what’s sure to be a phenomenal 2019 for Circus Trees.
