Gearing up for what’s sure to be one of the most talked about shows of the summer supporting the mighty Pelican along with Austin’s Porcelain on July 21st at The Sinclair (More on that later), Boston’s homegrown progenitors of all things modern Instru-Metal Post-heaviness (DEFINITELY a sub-genre) in Glacier ready a timely new release to hype their summer live dates following last year’s brilliant full-length A Distant, Violent Shudder.
Boasting a brand new track alongside 4 remixes, EP More Distant/More Violent broadens the scope that
Ryan Dooley, Jesse Vengrove, Derek Dooley, Ryan Traynor, & Liz Walshak as Glacier tread on the regular even, ahem, moreso and effortlessly blur that fine line of the raw Australasia-ness that Pelican launched over 20 years ago with Isis’ more nuanced approach on later outings like Wavering Radiant and In the Absence of Truth. And the lone new track on here, “The Barren Soil”, embodies ALL of that with a ten and a half minute opus that shreds, sways, and subverts the genre they’re often linked to. Brutally beautiful throughout its’ lengthy tenure, the eight minute mark brings about another tonal shift that’s just gnarly sounding and indicative that you never know what to expect when Glacier returns with something new.
Oh, and did someone say Re-re-re-REMIX?!?! Why yes, yes they did. And More Distant/More Violent has no shortage of them either as the four other tracks that round out the release feature some stellar ones by the likes of thisquietarmy, ameokama, Eeli Helin (Fawn Limbs, Resonant House, Antler Disko), and We Lost the Sea.
“Sun Bitten Old Timers” by Eeli Helin spills out of the aural assault brought by “The Barren Soil” and flips the whole dang script with a moodier, more sinister side of A Distant, Violent Shudder’s “The old timers said they’d never seen nothin’ like that” with an almost Horror Movie-esque air and the equivalent of sonic jump scares throughout that are akin to something out of a Dario Argento classic. ameokama takes on “Distant/Violent” on the aptly named “distant violent” which is a sparse, desolate, barren soundscape and unfurls like a lurching behemoth of sludgy sound in the vein of both HEALTH and Author/Punisher while “Old Timer Spiritual Recalibration” from We Lost the Sea is haunting with a robust percussive rumble that breaks up the ethereal passages. Concluding with the beyond massive reconfiguration “Anguish Rolled in Like a Distant, Violent Storm of Grief”, thisquietarmy ends Glacier’s newest release in epic fashion amidst almost 15 minutes of nascent noise that ebbs and flows pulling every last drop out of A Distant, Violent Shudder to truly make this More Distant/MoreViolent.
More Distant/More Violent arrives on July 11th ahead of that aforementioned slot with Pelican (And Porcelain) at The Sinclair on July 21st.
