Lovina Falls Hone Their Sound, Step Out From The Mistle Thrush Shadow On Defining Would That It Were

Design by Valerie Forgione

The momentum continues to build since Lovina Falls first burst onto the scene as a new outlet for Mistle Thrush’s Valerie Forgione and then metamorphosing into something much more organic with the revolving door of mighty musicians assisting Forgione at various points for something akin to Queens Of The Stone Age’s early years (Rated R and Songs For The Deaf especially) talent-wise resulting in LF’s newest collection of material, Would That It Were.

Opener “Light and Low” is a groovy track that transcends the ’90’s Alternative nostalgia from which it may have been creatively birthed as Forgione’s harpsichord twinklings mix with programmed beats for something fresh as David Minehan adds guitar with Todd Demma on drums to answer the all important question asked about any newer artist: “Well, what do they sound like?” This. Lovina Falls sounds like “Light and Low” which is why the track serves as the perfect beginning and sets the bar for what’s to come!

“About The Sun”, which we didn’t review (Gasp!), is somewhere between Twin Peaks/”Wicked Game” dreaminess and Oasis’ more subdued output (Read: Don’t Believe The Truth) beefed up again by Minehan and Alice Lee Scott’s guitars before bleeding nicely into “Tragedy” which we think is the greatest bridge between Calculating the Age of Our Descent era Lovina Falls and today.

“In The Corner, a Fire”, previously unreleased, features drums by Chuck Ferreira and is a spaced out yet driving number with Forgione’s effervescent delivery poking through the atmosphere before “Ellery Way” nicely wraps Would That It Were with a bow on top even as an appropriate Spooky SZN segue and highlighted by Matt Klain on bass, Brenden Cobb on guitar, and Demma on drums once again.

Would That It Were is out NOW and you can be the first of your friends to hear the magic when you head here, here or to the stream below. Next up, a release show! And that happens on September 13th at Sonia with Count Zero and Gene Dante and the Future Starlets and you can get tickets for that one here.
