Duran Duran has had a few resurgences over the course of their legendary career (Now in its’ 47th year!) with the first significant “comeback”, if you will, coming in 1993 and the release of Duran Duran (Or “The Wedding Album” as it’s often referred to). While “Ordinary World” is the one that put the ’80’s New Wave upstarts back on the map, it was “Come Undone” also from that album that solidified the fact that DD is inevitable.
Also inevitable are covers over the years with most artists tackling the ’80’s catalog and songs like “Rio” and “Hungry Like The Wolf” with the odd “Save A Prayer” or “Wild Boys” also popping up from time to time. The New York Electro/Synth duo that make up Close To Monday is not like most artists, though, as is pretty apparent listening through anything the outfit has put out so far. With that, and inspired by vocalist Ann rediscovering a video of her as a child dancing along to the original, the aforementioned “Come Undone” was the DD song of choice for CTM to take on.
And what a version this is! A bouncy Synthwave-infused cut that almost takes “Come Undone” back to DD’s roots in more Electronic-based textures as Alexander’s pointed programming throughout makes one wonder that if Nick Rhodes was let loose in a synthetic space to retool this gem might he, too, come up with something similar? Who knows! What we do know is that this is a wonderful cover with that main melody still intact and Ann making the song her own with a lush delivery that goes above and beyond doing justice to Simon Le Bon’s original emotive vocal performance.
In addition, CTM posed a challenge to their fans on social media with the idea for them to post a video doing something they dreamed of doing as a child using the part of “Come Undone” featuring the lyrics “Hey Child/Stay Wild” as a soundtrack and then using the hashtag #heychildstaywild influenced by Ann’s own video from her youth.
“Come Undone” is out now ahead of a new EP from Close To Monday called World Turtles which is slated to arrive in late February/early March.
