Singles! From Under Concrete Kings, “Running Up That Hill”

We’ll admit to being skeptical of any cover of “Running Up That Hill” after Placebo slayed with their take almost 20 years ago and, frankly, more than a little tired of hearing anything about that Kate Bush song as the whole Stranger Things hubbub did nothing for us. And then From Under Concrete Kings’ version came across our digital inbox and, well, we were impressed.

First off, the MA-based trio is labeled as “deathcore” so immediately the sense that this’ll be your typical cover is thrown out the window. That said, within the almost 5 minute timeframe here, From Under Concrete Kings step out of the confines of any label for a rousing rendition that’s like Killswitch Engage hanging out with Nekrogoblikon and time traveling back to the ’80’s to jam with Tears For Fears. Trust us, it makes sense. This particular cover pummels and shreds…. just as Kate Bush originally intended! Vocalist Joseph Izayea delivers equal parts shriek and Soul that’s complemented by the balanced measure of Josh Previte’s steady low end rumble and Monte Arnstam’s behemoth-sized beats on a track that’s easily the most interesting take on the iconic track yet!

“Running Up That Hill” arrives on January 13th (Ahead of a new EP featuring current drummer Freddy Velasco arriving later in 2023) and can be found by heading here or here. For the latest on From Under Concrete Kings, follow the trail of socials by clicking here or here.

  1. Thank you Jesse, so very much, for giving the thing a spin and for your incredibly kind review! We really appreciate it and are stoked you liked it! We wanted to let you know, that while Freddy Velasco is most certainly our guy and is drumming on our next EP, our good friend Monte Arnstam from Bent and 1357 Studios helmed the kit for this cover. We should have made the distinction in the press release, which is my fault. ‍♂️… But I wanted to make sure Monte got his due props for doing such a bang up job and helping us out! Thanks so much again for the review and for simply giving our stuff the time of day. Chenqui!
