Singles! Happy Little Clouds, “The Emperor’s Song”

Design Credit: Jac Mestel

We’ll be honest, we’re masking this new Singles! post as an excuse to chat early about the killer new Happy Little Clouds video coming your way soon… which is in itself an excuse to finally chat about “The Emperor’s Song” which we didn’t get a chance to properly chat about when it dropped on the eve of the most recent Bandcamp Friday. But we’re making up for last time now!

Whew! Now that that’s out of the way we can get to the point! Like the song! Which is awesome. We’ve mentioned this before but we were lucky enough to screen Dave Habeeb’s brilliant Beautiful Was The Fight documentary about both the women and LGBTQ+ community in the Boston Music Scene with Happy Little Clouds getting some much deserved air time throughout. And now they’re back with an Electro Rawk jam that is infectious and undeniably fun. Catchy and cathartic is also the case with the newest collection of notes from Jac Mestel on vocals/guitars/synths, drummer Jess Townsend, and bassist JD Bergstrom with “The Emperor’s Song” acting as sort of a starting point for those not already familiar with Happy Little Clouds but also as a reset for longtime fans of the Boston outfit with a new lineup aiding Mestel at the HLC helm.

Speaking of that new lineup, you can see them in all their costumed glory in the upcoming video accompaniment for “The Emperor’s Song”. Yes, you read that right. There are costumes. Mestel had, according to the press release, a “brilliant” idea to get in on the discounts right after Halloween and have the band dress up as variations of the titular emperor while performing in front of green screen (With Mestel’s own family vacations to Rome as just some of the footage played in the background). Visually, the video treatment is just as joyful to watch as it is to listen through with fans finding it hard not to crack a smile even on a bad day when they finally get to view Mestel, Townsend, and Bergstrom hamming it up while playing along to what could be the comeback song of 2024.

“The Emperor’s Song” single is out now and can be yours to stream and all that jazz when you head here with the aforementioned video arriving on February 27th. But! If you want to catch an early glimpse of the vid AND a live performance from Happy Little Clouds at the same time then make your way to The Square Root on February 24th where the trio will be premiering “The Emperor’s Song” for fans in attendance.
