Following the release of last year’s Sparkle Baby 2000 EP (Check it out here), Boston’s Sunshine Riot kickstart 2023 with a brand new single previewing yet another new EP on the horizon that’s destined to be a bold step forward for the quartet.
Did we say bold? Howzabout Sunshine Riot enlisting the help of the one and only STEVE ALBINI (Known, of course, solely for one of the greatest records ever created… Shellac’s 1000 Hurts) and recording their upcoming new collection of tunes at the legendary Electrical Audio in Chicago?!?! Bold enough for ya?
Somewhere in between Gaslight Anthem, Against Me!, and fellow Bostonians Eldridge Rodriguez sits the first taste of that EP in the form of “Looking at the Past” which brings a more anthemic quality to the Bean Town outfit’s brand of Folksy Alt-Americana. Credit the band and their natural evolution or Albini (Along with Taylor Hales at EA) for the added heft but everything just seems larger on this particular sonic bout. Whether it’s Steven Shepherd’s drums hitting harder to offset Jeff Sullivan’s bigger bass rumblings or the wall of sound that guitarists Mark Tetreault and Jonny Orton bring to the table accented by Orton’s Cobain-esque rasp throughout, there’s just no denying that this is some next level Sunshine Riot stuff here!
“Looking at the Past” lands on January 27th and can be yours to download and/or stream by heading here. For the latest from Sunshine Riot, including info on the upcoming EP (Loud, Bright and Violent, releasing April 21st), follow the trail of socials by clicking here, here, or here.
