Need some counterpoint to those shiny, happy songs being wrought forth from Boston Calling Day 3 acts like Dave Matthews Band, Sublime or Spin Doctors? Then make sure you make it in earlier and head to the Orange Stage especially for 4PM EST when Boston’s Vivid Bloom take the stage! And maybe if you’re super lucky, you’ll also get a chance to hear VB’s latest single, “Under the Sound”, as well!
As a whole, “Under the Sound” is this sort of glistening gloom and not unlike the sonic embodiment of wading through a fog on The Moors with the Vivid Bloom sounds acting as that burning bright light shining from a lighthouse in the distance to bring you home. Solemn guitar lines start this somber tome off before Erika Hansen’s ethereal vocals enter and enhance the atmosphere being created as, little by little, guitarist Liz Walshak (Who you might’ve seen recently alongside Glacier), bassist Tracy Putnam and drummer Alison Murray gradually enter the fray bringing a denseness and lush textures to the track before the divergent parts all collide as one to form this whirlwind of melodious harmony. Think Alice In Chains’ legendary “Nutshell” performance from their MTV Unplugged album with the way that Vivid Bloom build their vibes on “Under the Sound”. But heavier.
“Under the Sound” is available now and can be found by heading here (Where you can also get available tix for Boston Calling) or to the stream below. For more from Vivid Bloom, including all the deets on their Boston Calling appearance (In addition to that link we just shared, that is) and all the info on VB’s other upcoming shows like the one on May 30th at O’Brien’s with Harsh Foxing to support Thalia Zedek Band or the one on July 18th at Koto Salem with Spirit Hotel, The Diver and Chainlacing, head here or here.
