What we’ve found since diving into the Wayward Vine well of awesome is that, in the lead up to their upcoming album, you never know what you’re gonna get sonically. There’s stuff out there like “Narcissist’s Disguise” which brings a certain kind of somber Pop while most recent single “History” is a modern Alterna-classic in the vein of early R.E.M. or Gin Blossoms.
Latest single “Implode” is no different with an opening progression reminiscent of The Cure’s “Boys Don’t Cry” to add a little Post-something to Wayward Vine’s established cornucopia of Folksy Alternative Americana Rawk. With Valerie Rachel behind the mic and keys on this one, the message of how an inner turmoil affects the people around in you in different ways which “implode” touches on speaks volumes with the current state of affairs such as they are in this country currently. But, like most tracks up to this point, WV’s soundtrack to the impending apocalypse aims to uplift especially with the sugary sweet way Rachel delivers lines like: “Your life is a trainwreck/Going neck and neck with disaster”
Jim St. Pierre and Jose Downes keep things bright through their respective robust rhythmic pairing on the drums and bass while Greg Lawrence on vocal harmonies and rhythm guitar bulks up the bounce of it all. Rounding out the lineup, Yoni Gordon brings some vibrant leads that succinctly sync with the main melody then go off with some scorching solos peppered throughout.
