RNRF X Rock & Roll Rumble 2023: Week 1, Night 1

We’re doing it because we are HYPED that the Rock And Roll Rumble is finally back. We’re also hyped that more than a handful of artists that are part of this year’s class have graced our pages in some way, shape, or form! Regardless of the reasons: HYPED! Boston Emissions’ own Anngelle Wood has once again masterfully curated a class of 24 talented artists from the Bay State and surrounding areas who will face off 4 at a time across 6 nights at the Middle East Upstairs beginning on April 6th before moving next door to Sonia for 2 Semi-Final rounds and eventually culminating there on May 6th where a final 3 will duke it out sonically to determine the 2023 champ. Whoo! Are you HYPED???

And it all starts off on Night 1 at Middle East Upstairs on April 6th with doors at 8PM and the RAWK starting at 9PM SHARP! Let’s dive in, shall we:

Graveyard of the Atlantic (9PM EST): With new singles “Spinning Plates” and “Exit Interview” recorded with Jim Wirt (Incubus, No Doubt) just released, GotA look to capitalize with some serious momentum heading in as the FIRST BAND TO LAUNCH THE RUMBLE!!! But no pressure because luckily, this pair of scorching Rawk anthems are as solid as their back catalog (A lot of which is available here). For even more from Graveyards of the Atlantic, follow them across their socials by heading here, here, or here.

The Shallows (945PM EST): In a, ahem, sea of such diverse talent, The Shallows is definitely the biggest outlier of Night 1 and perhaps of the whole Rumble! Latest single “Verdant” has airs of both Post-Rawk Alt outfit Black Light Burns and Lush swimming in their sonic soup with the rest of what they have to offer currently so far (Check it here) also standing out with vocalist Jess Baggia’s angelic yet haunting delivery at the forefront of their stunningly serene collection of songs leading to their debut full-length this May. For the latest, head to the socials here and here.

Bird Language (1030 PM EST): Ah, an artist we’ve previously come across! But we are an unbiased listener right now! Bird Language is still flying high (Get it? Cuz their name???) off last year’s 625 Days full-length and the group of grand Nu-Grunge tunes contained within that’d slay on 120 Minutes back in the day just as much as it does in the here and now. Get yer Bird Language fix now and all the pertinent links by clicking here.

Kooked Out (11:15PM EST): Ready for some Stoneham Ska??? Well, not quite… Along the lines of the recent modern Blues revival mixed with Reggae which is more The Police than it is Bob Marley, Kooked Out masterfully delivers an original hybrid sound that’s, ahem, kooky and krafty and continually builds and builds adding more elements that further enhance the listening experience on their last record, Vis Viva. You can find out for yourself by clicking the Bandcamp stream below or by heading to their social media pages found here, here, and here.

And that concludes our preview of Night 1 of the 2023 edition of the Rock And Rumble which takes place at Middle East Upstairs in Cambridge on Thursday, April 6th. Doors open at 8PM with a 9PM start time planned. Ticket links for all shows are located here with “Full Boat” passes for the whole shebang available here.
