We were not privy to the apparent internet sensation that was Onyx The Fortuitous as it was happening. Instead we randomly came across a trailer for the movie of the same name (Onyx The Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls) because it looked fun and “Oh look! It’s Barbara Crampton and Jeffrey Combs!”, was able to hit one of the limited theater screenings when it arrived in October of 2023, and became fans for life of the artistry of its’ creator (And Onyx hisself), Andrew Bowser.
If Bowser’s follow-up to that gem of a film was a commercial for an auto dealership we would’ve fired up the ole DVR to catch it and basked in its’ glow over and over some more (Or found it on YouTube somewhere…) but as luck would have it, the Onyx… follow-up hit a little closer to the Horror home (Actually even moreso than Onyx…) and ponders the age old question of what would happen when a busload of Burlesque performers are brought back to life following a tragic accident by Mad Scientist Liam McPoyle (Jimmi Simpson) and Devout Man Of The Cloth Bobby Briggs (Dana Ashbrook) to be subservient ’50’s housewives?!?!
You know you wanna know more and, of course, the only answer to what would happen is complete and utter CARNAGE! It’s pure Pulp comic meets Grindhouse in full technicolor dreaminess and while only a short, we’d gladly see this supernatural group of gruesome vixens terrorize for a longer length of time because this 10 minutes here barely contains the charisma exuded from the likes of Penny Barber (“Brain”), Little Puck (“Jumper”), Bunni Black (“Stripe”), Savannah Solo (“Bob”), Cheyenne Jaz Wise (“Patches”), Stephanie Michelle (“Stitches”), Melissa Drew (“Twisted Sister”), and Hex Hypoxia (“Twisted Sister”)! Add in a kickass theme song by The Kurls that’ll get stuck in your head long after the credits have ended and you have the right recipe for one raucous good time!
Frankenbabes From Beyond The Grave! from Amalgam Studios had its’ East Coast Premiere at this year’s Salem Horror Fest back in May and is currently still doing the festival rounds. To find out where you can catch it next, and for more Bowser-related happenings, stay tuned to these locations here or here. And if you’re looking for some new decor for your office at home, help some local talent by checking out Jeremy Saffer’s stunning eye and the recent Onyx/Andrew Bowser series that’s available for purchase here.
