Singles! Count Zero, “Overthinking”

Designed by Will Ragano

We’ll admit that we weren’t in the know when Boston’s Count Zero initially made an impact in the early aughts but we’ll always be the first to admit when we dig the hell out of something and we dig the hell out of what they’ve got going on now with their upcoming album and lead single, “Overthinking”.

What we will not admit, however, is how bad of an idea it is to listen to the whole album said single comes off of while trying to focus on the here and now. Which we just did admit to. Oops? Anyway! “Overthinking” is something else. If you’ve never experienced Count Zero before then we can’t think of a better entryway than this one to introduce new listeners into the Electro-Pop world that CZ inhabit.

But “Overthinking” is so much more than just “Electro-Pop” or any one genre for that matter with the new single presenting a sort of modernization of ’50’s Doo-Wop with the way the background vox consistently chime in. Then there’s the grandiose vibe led by Jude Heichelbech’s keys and the orchestral by way of a film score nature of the proceedings where every bit is so vital no matter how subtle it might seem at first. Like Mike Corbett’s bass and Shawn Marquis’ drums which are so necessary to the overall sonic foundation or the way that Will Ragano and Peter Moore’s guitars fade in and out of the recording like a spectre. Then there’s Moore’s vocals here which are just as grand as they swell with the instrumental crescendo and decrescendos heading toward a layered harmony peak that’s filled with Soul and reminiscent of some of Prince’s work off his Batman soundtrack (“Lemon Crush” especially comes to mind).

“Overthinking” arrives on October 11th ahead of Count Zero’s first full-length in 13 years, Thought So, on November 8th with a release show scheduled for that same night presented by Bumblebee Radio at Sonia with Lovina Falls and Singer Mali as support (Advance tix available here).
