Girl With A Hawk, we’ve missed you! Absence does make the heart grow fonder but we’re pretty sure (Okay, 100% sure) that we would’ve been fond of the band’s latest track, “Wasn’t It Just Yesterday”, whether it was released years, months, days, minutes or seconds after their last drop.
Anyway! There’s lots to celebrate in the GWAH camp right now as this latest single also acts a precursor to the debut full-length from the quintet of Linda Viens (Lead vocal, Guitar, Backing Vox), Nancy Delaney (Drums/Percussion), Richard Lamphear (Keys), Dan Bernfeld (Bass, Backing Vox) and Daniel Coughlin (Guitar, Backing Vox)! As a an aside and as a reminder, we typically haven’t ranked our year end local music round-up, choosing instead to shine a light on all we’ve covered throughout a given year (And a few we missed). However, with an album such as Regenesis (Out June 19th through Rum Bar Records) on the way and the overall quality of so many recent releases more or less necessitating a different strategy we find ourselves pondering yet again: “Are we ranking the local records this year?”
But we’re holding off on that problem for another day because yaye procrastination? No! It’s because we’re all about the sleek nostalgia fest that is the closing track on Regenesis, “Wasn’t It Just Yesterday”! Despite the subject matter (Gettin’ old!), the amount of sheer joy that emanates from whatever listening device you choose to listen is on undeniable… and infectious! Viens’ voice has always been a delight, navigating each song/style tackled with a presence that’s at times a mix of Stevie Nicks & Chrissie Hynde while others Patti Smith & Lucinda Williams and on this latest sonic celebration that still rings true. Also true is the compounded happiness that’s conveyed through song when Lamphear, Bernfeld, Coughlin and Delaney join in!
