The minute that Mat McNerney of Bloodmilk/Grave Pleasures fame was announced as the voice of new outfit Scorpion Milk we were in. To be fair, we would’ve been in having heard that awesome throwback Post-Punk sound radiating off of lead single “Another Day Another Abyss” as well but the McNerney element definitely sealed the deal.
You read that right, kids, there’s a new Post-Punk project in town and their name is Scorpion Milk. Unlike many of McNerney’s other projects that dabble in the modern realm of that genre, Scorpion Milk makes no bones about their nods to the past with a sound that’d feel more at home next to Killing Joke’s Night Time than it would Grave Pleasures’ Plagueboys. Speaking of KJ, the legendary Paul Ferguson even makes a special appearance on SM’s debut! As for “Another Day…”, though, fans get the mighty Tor Sjödén on drums (Viagraboys) plus Converge’s own Nate Newton on bass (Also, of course, of Old Man Gloom and Cave In notoriety among others).
The song itself is just a small taste of what’s to come, giving listeners barely a glimpse into the old world that McNerney has resurrected with virulent guitar licks that glisten with that uncanny maw mouthing words written “about trying to stay upright under the daily flood of catastrophe, the headlines, the numbness, the helplessness.”
