The music that Smitt E. Smitty & The Fezztones creates really and truly exists in a realm all its’ own. Not necessarily indescribable but more a genre unto itself and with each new outing, the collective corner some new facet of music and make it their own. And that’s the case on latest single, “Bye Bye Sunday Afternoon”, a breezy Dee-Lite meets The B 52’s groove out bolstered by Andrew Padua’s big bass bounce, a bigger vocal presence from JoEllen Saunders Yannis and Linda Pardee, and some Rawk violin courtesy of Jonathan LaMaster!
Yes, kids. Rawk violin. And it rules especially when LaMaster lets loose for a fiery solo late in the track. But before all that the aforementioned Pardee and Yannis take center stage with the fezzed one, bandleader Smitt E. Smitty, taking a backseat vocally at least but still bringing the back up vox to another killer chorus as well as some striking sounds on the keys to add to a righteous atmosphere. And did we mention that Smitty directed the video for this mammer jammer as well? Because he did and showcases the band (Along with drummer Johnny Sestito and guitarists James Melanson and Eddie Nowick) as masked crusaders animatedly performing while emblazoned across billboards everywhere interspersed with trippy visuals akin to watching one of Dire Straits’ first forays into the video realm.
