Singles! Sunday Junkie, “Vultures”

Artwork: Tom Martin

We might be late to the party but that doesn’t mean we haven’t been listening the high holy hell out of the debut single from Sunday Junkie! Were you, like us, absolutely enthralled by the performances that Not Bad Not Well delivered during the 2023 Rock & Roll Rumble? Or any of their live shows for that matter?? Were you saddened by their untimely hiatus but also excited at the prospects of the various projects that branched off the NBNW tree??? If yes to any of those, read on! Or maybe just read on to see where we’re going with all this…

In the last 6 months and change there’s been music from the 2024 Rock & Roll Rumble entrant and recent Boston Music Award-nominated (Like us!) Gut Health who feature Not Bad’s Gregg Kusumah-Atmadja while The Brother Stereo just dropped their debut single with NBNW’s Shawn Pelkey popping up behind the kit there. Speaking of Pelkey, he’s the other half of Sunday Junkie which boasts Not Bad Not Well’s guitarist Tom Martin who is also handling bass and lead vocals on debut single “Vultures”.

Of those three, if you were looking for the one that most captures the magic that Not Bad Not Well has then we think Sunday Junkie is gonna be as close as you’re gonna get. Sure, Kusumah-Atmadja is a veritable force behind the mic but what Martin brings is just as palpable with an electric energy that permeates throughout “Vultures”. Pelkey, as ever, is a multi-faceted metronome with Martin’s voice a mix of Matt Bellamy and Jim Ward on a track that’s a little more straightforward Alt Rawk with some Prog tendencies that’s no less expansive as the sound their other outfit strived for.
