I was never really into Biohazard, okay? Despite them being on heavy rotation during Headbanger’s Ball when my musical identity was being formed, I tended to glom onto some of the more melodic Brooklyn-based outfits at the time (Life Of Agony, Type O Negative). That’s not to say I didn’t respect what they were doing but the moment “Punishment” came on while I was waiting for something else Riki Rachtman had teased just meant it was bathroom break time. I am waaaaaay late to the Flotsam And Jetsam party. And I’m not talking about my initial introduction when I was younger watching them on Headbanger’s Ball as “that band that the new bassist from Metallica used to be in” while they were promoting Cuatro and the very ’90’s video treatment for “Wading Through The Darkness” (Which you can get nostalgic for yourself by heading here). Instead of boasting on the fact that we’ve yet to review an Evergrey record despite attempting to on multiple occasions, howzabout we just call an audible and start over? That said, clean slate initiative engaged! So yeah, Evergrey has been around for some time and is still one of Sweden’s Premier Progressive Power Metal outfits. If you’ve heard any of the eleven records that’ve come before then you’d know that fact to be true. Also true is that almost thirty years into their career and with album number twelve lurking on the horizon, Evergrey sound as vital and relevant as, ahem, ever especially on Escape Of The Phoenix.
