There are a few artists that I’ve reviewed here, and I’ve mentioned this before, that just kind of fall off my radar after their record of the moment is out and available. Not for lack of liking but more the abundance of new music coming in on the daily. But then I get a ping as something new from the artist is about to drop and get to give myself a refresher and dive back into their old stuff for research, nostalgia, and the inevitable comparison or two.

Any fan of Goth, Industrial, Electro, and Darkwave who has yet to check out recent outings from Gary Numan should hand in their membership card this instant. We’re about twenty years into Numan V.2 which began in 2000 with the release of Pure (Or with more regularity in releases since 2006’s Jagged) and since then, the legendary innovator and artist has continually gotten better and better, not only adding to his already impressive legacy with the the newer material but perhaps, just perhaps, exceeding it.

As we’ve said in the past, cover albums in general are hit or miss. Give Monster Magnet the reins on one, though, and watch out! A Better Dystopia, the upcoming covers collection from New Jersey’s real favorite sons, sees Monster Magnet at their absolute gnarliest and Psych Rawk best throughout 13 tracks that sounds more like the latest Monster Magnet banger than a consistent nod to the past.

I put EGGVN in the same realm of Strvngers not only because they both sport a random “V” in place of a vowel in their name but also due the tone and intent of their sonic messages. They’re both modern Darkwave darlings in these offices but today we’re taking a deeper look into EGGVN and their latest which embraces the almighty heaviness alongside the synthetic backdrop.

Dying for that new Meshuggah record to be done and out already? But wish they’d diversify and inject something new into their tried and true formula? Then Vexed is the outfit for you! And on their debut full-length, the Hertfordshire quartet offer up eleven righteous tracks that raise the stakes regarding where modern Metal is going.

Sumo Cyco is the sound of No Doubt fronted by Tairrie B. They’re heavy, they’re trendy, they’re genre-bending yet accessible and on Initiation, the Canadian quartet create the definitive Sumo Cyco album that cuts to the core of who they are and streamline their sound to bring listeners their best release yet.

It’s hard to put into words the sounds that are coming out of my speakers when Kataan is playing. It’s this unholy union of Black Metal and Thrash and Post-something that’s just devilishly divine. Featuring Nick Thornbury of Vattnet Viskar and Brett Boland of Astronoid, Kataan does the New England heavy music scene proud with a debut release that’s short and anything but sweet.

Pile driving anthem after anthem is the name of the game when you press “Play” on the latest decadent slab of Rawk from the UK’s Trucker Diablo. That said, Tail End Of A Hurricane isn’t as much the name of Trucker Diablo’s latest album as much as it is an apt descriptor of the sonic destruction caused in their wake upon hearing this new beastie in full.

My process when going through new music is this: Listen through everything that comes across ye olde digital desk, either begin a draft or at least jot down the records that are doing something to the creative juices, and depending on how far along a potential draft is (If there’s a significant amount typed up then it’s pretty much a given that review is coming) then eventually circle back closer to the actual release date for one final listen thorough before settling in to finish a review. And it’s not always immediately apparent when diving back in why something struck a nerve in some way but then a song will come on or a note will hit and everything just clicks.

Domkraft’s third full-length is filled with colossal sounds made up some of the gnarliest, most nasty sounding riffs that Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler wished they’d discovered first. Cap off all that inherent Heavy with an exquisite musicianship throughout and Seeds is easily a contender for many a year-end best list. Including ours.
