Ex-Hyena Take Listeners On A Futuristic Sonic Odyssey With Sophomore Outing Moon Reflections

You’re not likely to find a more original outfit in the current Boston music scene than Ex-Hyena. A ridiculously hard to pin down outfit that’s part TV On The Radio, part The Faint, and part Massive Attack put through some futuristic Cyberdyne-fueled filter within the sonic odyssey that Daft Punk created in Tron: Legacy. Still with us? Well, that descriptor barely scratches the surface of what the rest of Moon Reflections holds!

But I digress!

“At The Moondial” is trippy as loose grooves become interspersed amongst a synthetic swell and vocals that seemingly shift in and out of a dream state before a droning piano line gives way to a more structured approach as the bleeps and boops become more present…and ominous. “Sight Unseen” has been around as a single for a bit and if you hadn’t heard it before then prepare for a goddamn revelation and an Ex-Hyena tutorial that’s menacing yet magical while “Fractured” treads in an ethereal realm giving listeners a glimpse into an imaginary world where Massive Attack never stopped producing albums following Heligoland.

“Nightmare Pills” fervently ups the Moon Reflections dance quotient for this bumpin’ Electro ditty that’s tinged with a Chk Chk Chk air with “Tremors” emerging from a static haze and responding to the preceding track with a wistful mood piece as subtle guitar flourishes accentuate the synthetic world that Reuben Bettsak and Bo Barringer have concocted.

“Capture The Stills” is intense with a sound akin to Leonard Cohen doing Darkwave with “Euphorbia” following for a Earthling-era Bowie fronting the aforementioned Massive Attack airy number that just exudes a feeling of sleek and sexy. “Dark Passage” is intrinsically intricate and intimate relying on entangled beats to propel this latest tale with “Magnification” giving off a distinctly whimsical vibe as “While Curtains Burn” descends with a throbbing hum that closes out Moon Reflections in a flurry of cacophonous sounds.

Moon Reflections dances its’ way into your ears on June 24th through Hush Club Ltd. and Brutal Resonance.
