We get way too overhyped when we kind of jump at something on a whim and it turns out to be epically amazing. For example, there was just something about “Hole In My Head” from Brooklyn’s Luxury Skin that really stuck with us long after we first came across it. It was unique and infectious and an all around brilliant slab of beautiful Art Rawk. And just barely scratches the surface of what unfolds from LS maestro Juliet E. Gordon across new LP I’ll Get You Out Of Here, Baby.
Anyway!
The intern here absolutely loves when the name of the album gets uttered in a song so already, opener “Bleed For Me” was a winner in their book. For us, it’s a winner because… see the opening paragraph? But seriously, it’s cool yet complicated infusing elements of Alternative, Jazz, Trip-Hop, Pop and more with ease for just under four minutes of sonic suaveness that feels like an eternity (In THE best way) with the movements it goes through in such a short amount of time. Our LS intro track, “Hole In My Head”, hits even harder in the I’ll Get You… context with its’ start/stop percussive attacks out of both Gintas Janusonis’ Drums and Gordon’s Piano while “The Part” is filled with twinkling Synths and Henry Fraser’s upright Bass and a quirky air making for some Funky Alternative.
“Counting My Money” is also unbelievably great as well. Y’know what, let’s just put this out there now: All of I’ll Get You Out Of Here, Baby is unbelievably great, okay? Now back to “Counting My Money” which features another stellar vocal performance from Gordon, running the gamut of styles and scales and adapting the constantly changing tempos driven from Ryan Sawyer’s drumming. “Repeating Myself” is a mixture of Pop, Gospel and Trip-Hop all at once with the way Gordon’s repeated hypnotic refrains fade in and out of focus, “Die Waiting” is lush, somber, operatic even and “Little Birdie” is playful and quirky at its’ onset then becomes something that could easily be found amongst Bowie’s later works.
“Hope Dies Last” starts like Old School Massive Attack (Think Blue Lines‘ opening, ahem, attack especially) then sexily and serenely segues into a grand ole Baroque affair with Gordon dropping some especially ethereal vocals (Accented by accompaniment from Margaret Wehr, Hannah Glavor, and Lizzie Ellison) followed by “All Of Myself” which starts out akin to a lullaby then brings a jazzy Drum ‘N’ Bass breakdown before “My Affection” spirals out of that for an elegantly expressive finale that strips it all back until Gordon takes her final bow at this particular Luxury Skin show.
