Pyramids Bring The Reggaeton-Infused Post-Black Metal Shoegaze Epic You Didn’t Know You Needed In 2025 On Pythagoras

Cover art/Nails by: Kro Vargas (Krocaine)

As of right now, we have about 4 different intro paragraphs drafted for the newest from Pyramids which we’re still going to attempt to use in some capacity because Pythagoras is such a clusterfuck of sounds (In a good way) that we think it’s the kind of record that deserves that kind of epic heralding beforehand. And we hope you’ll agree! Hell, we were so enamored with lead single “Fools Gold (Mi Vida Ha Ido Pa Atras)” that we came this close to buying a second copy of the album on vinyl (You see, we’ve been trying to keep our impulse pre-ordering down recently) because we hadn’t realized we immediately pre-ordered it on the strength of that song alone if that tells you anything. And to be honest, having a second copy (As long as we didn’t get the same pressing) would not be a bad thing either.

Okay, so what are you getting into when you press “play”/put the needle down on Pythagoras? Easily one of the most unique genre-defying albums of 2025 if not at least the decade and one that just sounds so fucking cool built on these lush and layered vibes. If you wanted a place where Reggaeton, Black Metal, Shoegaze, Dancehall, Pop and Post-everything converge to party then you’re in the right place. A record nine years in the making, Pythagoras is a mixture of both Massive Attack (Especially Horace Andy/Tricky-fronted material) and Unkle in terms of feels combined with ANOHNI and The Johnsons (Formerly Antony & The Johnsons) and an ever-present ominous atmosphere that brings to mind Black Metal. And since we’re in The Flenser stable on this one, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention airs of Black Wing and Have A Nice Life all up in here as well.

We think Pythagoras is also the first record where listeners aren’t going to know whether they should mosh or interpretive dance or do the Samba to it. And that’s fine. In fact, all of those are the right answer. Or none of them are. But at the end of the day, Pythagoras is going to cause you to move in some way and that’s partly the beauty of it.

And those tunes that Matthew Kelly, Matthew Embree, David Embree, Rich Loren Balling, and Emy Smith have created? Nothing short of brilliant. From the aforementioned opening pangs of “Fools Gold (Mi Vida Ha Ido Pa Atras)” straight through to the closing ethereal godliness of, ahem, “God Of Light”, Pythagoras does not disappoint. In between is a bevy of tracks that defy classification from even note to note at times and filled with a dual vocal approach that are pointed, potent, and serene all at once. Recent singles “Pretty Pigs” and “Bones and Eggshells” highlight that and showcase music that is oozing with an energy amidst a steady, bubbly bounce and some seriously big ass beats. Elsewhere on the record, “Mira Mirame Brillar” is a jam and then some with these Santana-esque Latin-flavored guitar licks while “Brine” starts with an anthemic guitar line in the vein of that iconic Top Gun theme with “Cracks” being so multi-faceted you’ll swear there’s two songs playing at once (Have fun with those subdued screams just beneath the surface of the song).

Pythagoras drops on May 2nd through The Flenser and you can pre-order yours before then by heading here. For more from Pyramids, head on over to the information superhighway and click here for all the latest.
