While our familiarity with Billy Joel music goes far beyond “We Didn’t Start the Fire”, having started with An Innocent Man on vinyl through Columbia House (Anyone remember that???) and also through High School Jazz Band with “New York State Of Mind” as a staple of our set, we wouldn’t call ourselves experts by any means. That is to say while we might not be well versed in the intricacies of the Billy Joel discography we can still respect the hell out of the storied career he’s had.
Someone who IS more well versed with Joel’s body of work is one of our most favorite local outfits, blindspot, who pay tribute to the iconic singer/songwriter/piano man following his recent NPH (Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus) diagnosis with a rendition of “Vienna” off of The Stranger. Stripped down and shedding the Indie Alternative bombast the Boston-based duo is known for, “Vienna” sees vocalist Alexa Economou emotively crooning the classic track with accompaniment from Chris Cormier on piano and guitar that’s not only a fitting homage to Joel but also an excellent addition to the growing blindspot musical legacy.
blindspot’s version of “Vienna” is out now and you can find it by heading here or to either of the clips bookending this post (We wanted to make sure you saw it!). For more on blindspot, including all the latest on upcoming new music and live shows, hit their socials by clicking here, here, or here.
