Singles! Gretchen Shae & The Middle Eight, “Safehouse”

Getting dense in the world of Gretchen Shae & The Middle Eight to end the year by doubling down on the sonic swag that the band regularly exudes, “Safehouse” is yet another bright light in the burgeoning catalog from the Boston-based outfit.

With “Safehouse”, Gretchen Shae & The Middle Eight get their Gothic Rockabilly on with some Post-Rawk tendencies (Especially the drum and guitar interplay toward the end) for a song that captures that early sound ofThe Cure (Especially with the way Killian Carcosa rawks that low end) and adds some more texture (Leah Gutman’s viola accompaniment definitely deepens the “Safehouse” sound) not unlike the haunting Rawk that Wailin’ Storms lays down on the regular. Nick Mehos’ drumming is steady and determined but with a menace to it, Ronan Fahy’s lead guitars are mesmerizing with a constant flow and fierceness, and Shae, who also adds some more guitar flavor, gives another powerhouse vocal performance alternating from lush laments to tender trills.

In short, if you’re looking for the soundtrack for an oncoming storm then “Safehouse” is your jam.
