Before we dive into the awesomeness that is “You’ve Got to Choose” from Boston’s The Sean Coleman Project we’d just like to acknowledge how continually rad Knyvet is to the music community at large and how, despite not necessarily having the ball knowledge or being our cuppa, they keep shining a light on diverse acts that we find ourselves becoming fans of regardless of the kinds of music they make. Like The Sean Coleman Project! Which is a far cry from our last review (Which would be a feature on the new record from The Barbarians Of California…) and probably way out there related to our next review, too (And not to toot and such but we do feature a pretty eclectic variety of sounds as well if we can boast for a sec).
Anyway!
Featuring Mia Boostrom (Who you either know from Season 14 of The Voice or for just having a killer voice) on Vocals, “You’ve Got to Choose” initially began out as a Gospel number according to Coleman until elements of Blues became more prevalent but for us, those two genres really go hand in hand so it’s no wonder that match was made during the creative process. On that note, those Blues/Gospel elements are for sure in there but the beauty of the song right here is in its’ ability to blur lines between sonic worlds with bits of Jazz, Alternative, Folk, Americana and Rawk all thrown into the musical melting pot. Beyond all that, and already being a showcase for Boostrom’s vibrant voice, “You’ve Got to Choose” also serves as a guitarists’ dream with Coleman handling the main solo yet providing room for Bill Danylik, Andrew Gravel and Sam Crawford to explore lush textures within the song while Sean McLaughlin (Bass), Mike Levesque (Drums) and Brad Goff (Keys) add parts that not only bulk up the track but beautify the overall feel of this new The Sean Coleman track.
