One of the most diverse Rawk outfits on the Boston music scene currently, War On Alexandria return with one huge last hurrah for 2020 and a song that is easily their most complex and intriguing yet. Built upon this brooding atmosphere, “The Void” taps into the darker aspects of Possum Kingdom (Think “I Burn” especially off that classic record by The Toadies) to create the first War On Alexandria dirge.
While modern Alt Rawk is still the lay of the land for the quartet, War On Alexandria open up their sonic palette even more on “The Void” and travel the murky waters of Sludge and Doom at times as they invite listeners on this six minute gargantuan journey. Emma Keefe is both delicate and daring with her vocal choices here, sounding vulnerable one moment and vibrant the next as she cries out to match Liam McCain’s devilish guitar lines.
Elsewhere, bassist Lucas McCain drives the track with these reverberations that pummel along like a nervous heartbeat and later become this passionate throb akin to Les Claypool’s sound while Corey Spingel’s drums accent each attack with these luscious lambasts that effectively accent the all around menacing vibe of “The Void”.
