Holy hell, it can’t be legal to have something this creepy and only about 6 or 7 minutes long, right??? And with jump scares to boot (Yes, “scares” as in plural)?!?! Sometimes it’s the ones with the least amount of set up or simplest set up depending on how you look at it that are the scariest and that’s the case with FREE bench MUST PICK UP TODAY from writer/director Gus Reed.

The Gourd, the Brad, and the Ghostly is one of those Horror movies where an aficionado of the genre (And even casual viewers) should see the time left after the supposed “resolution” and immediately have all the alarms in their head sound as an involuntary “Oh no!” escapes their lips. The remake of The Ring with its’ 3 different drawn out/equally horrifying endings after the kid’s all “Why did you let her out of the well?” comes to mind and while The Gourd, the Brad, and the Ghostly from director Jillian Terwedo-Malsbury and writers Rob Knoll and Annie McGrath isn’t as terrifying it’s definitely chilling in its’ own right.

Um, what? That’s from a conversation between Stacy (Samantha Carroll) and friend Lana (Sally Sum) about the bold serial killer on the loose in Young Blondes, Stalked and Murdered who chooses up and coming blonde actresses in the Los Angeles area and should pretty much sum up why the film from writer/director Nick Funess is absolutely not what you’d thought it’d be. Making it perfect for Salem Horror Fest.

When doing our initial go through of flicks to pick from the Salem Horror Fest we look for descriptions that appeal to our Horror tastes (Which is pretty broad already), a kickass trailer if available, and sometimes just the press pic or poster associated within the blurb over on the SHF page (The one for My Mother’s Eyes right now has us similarly curious and creeped out). With Faceless After Dark from director Raymond Wood (1st Summoning, Cells) it was all three that did it for us and we can’t think of a better feature in the “Official Selection” category to kick off our coverage of Salem Horror Fest in 2024.
