We apologize in advance for the upcoming rant but please trust that there’s a point to all of this: Not many artists lately make these broad Pop anthems anthems anymore. The kind of song that transcends genres and just hits at the right time. (This is where it’s gonna get weird…) Now please don’t take this the wrong way but we’re talking “Fly” by Sugar Ray or Crazy Town’s Butterfly” or even “Iris” by Goo Goo Dolls. Say what you will about the quality but those songs were EVERYWHERE during their respective times and they were the kind of tracks that played over every kind of radio station regardless of if one band had a Metal background, the other mostly of Nu-Metal origins and then whatever Goo Goo Dolls are (It’s Alternative, we know!)
When we listen to “Tell Your Friends”, the upcoming new single from Boston’s Emily Grogan (Who does NOT sound like any of the artists we mentioned above. At. All.), we get that vibe. The only comparable artist at the moment is one that’s finishing up a stint of 4 sold out shows at a local ballpark (Yes, we occasionally imbibe. NK is a delight!)
But back to Emily! “Tell Your Friends” is Alternative Rawk and alternative to the overly divisive, well, everything that seems prevalent in society today. Signal boosted by Eric Donahue (Bass, Moog), Larry Dersch (Drums), Michele Cavallari (Keyboards/Synths) and Chad Raleigh (Electric Guitar) with Grogan tackling Lead/Backup Vox, Piano, Synths and Acoustic Guitar as well as handling the songwriting, lyrics AND arrangement, “Tell Your Friends” also benefits from walking the sonic tightrope between being both the most perfect show/album opener ever and a spot on closing number that ebbs, flows and swells in the most epic ways. Grogan’s voice and words are captivating the moment they light up that mic, surrounded by a serene soundscape that teeters a little on the somber side if they weren’t so darn hopeful through and through.
