As avid “Weird Al” Yankovic fans, Sam Mulligan’s new single all about pizza really spoke to us. Partly because we like pizza. And partly because we understand how sometimes your favorite thing can also be the source of much financial malaise (But in our case, it’s more music, movies and comics).
The song is called “Broke” off an album that’s all about pizza (Pizza Forever, out on May 15th) and is kind of a mix of “White & Nerdy” (Not the last Yankovic reference we’re making here, sorry) and Bloodhound Gang (But less sweary) from the guitarist of Battlemode. That’s right! The riff-meister from the band that’s your one stop shop of regional Chiptune greatness has slowed things down (slightly) while still swimming in the genre that Battlemode has become synonymous with but infused it with a nifty Pop sheen, bouncy beats and a vocal cadence from Mulligan that’s oh so catchy. And if you’ll allow us one last trip down Yankovic lane: “Broke” is a style parody if the style emulated was Yankovic who, ironically, is the godfather of the style parody genre. Still with us? If not, the point is that “Broke” is awesome and we think that after hearing it, you too, will be ready for the next sonic slice!
“Broke” is out now and you can get your first taste now when you click here or on the stream below. For more from Mulligan, including the latest on Pizza Forever (Releasing on “National Pizza Party Day”, May 15th!), hit the socials, conveniently located together when you head here.
