Sometimes I get requests for coverage from artists I really dig but because of one thing or another, it gets put on the backburner. That’s not to say I forgot about it because I remember EVERYTHING but more that it goes to some dark corner of my head mush waiting for an ideal time to work it’s way back into the casual conversation that is our pseudo-regular posting schedule.

Don’t call it a throwback, they’ve been here for years….okay, enough with the silliness. But to be fair, Toronto’s Phantom High IS something of a throwback with a sound that’s this modernized take on a notorious genre that’s seen an uptick by some young artists in recent years. We’re, of course, talking about Nu-Metal and under Phantom High’s watchful eye the genre is not only updated but, dare we say, elevated??? It’s true! But don’t take our word for it, just listen to the tunes!

What can we say about Temptress that we haven’t already said? Release after release, the Manchester, NH-based outfit continually reach for the stars and still tend to propel their sound far beyond that (Didja see Interstellar? Think that in terms of sonic scope). With their latest, “Out Of Control”, Temptress look to defy odds once again, adding to their musical palette and simultaneously crushing expectations.

TV Priest is that missing piece between newer school Post-Punk luminaries Coliseum or Radio 4 and legends like Gang Of Four. Add in a front person who has a penchant for non-sensical barking sermons in the vein of Clutch’s Neil Fallon or Nick Cave and you have yourself the makings of one very fine collection of truly unique modern Rawk.

I feel like there’s a lot of records we’ll be hailing as “must-hear” especially this soon after leaving that shitshow of a year in the rearview. Once in a blue moon (Or once in a full moon?)…or more like once every month or two comes an album that’s so out of my normal listening frequencies that just hits. Recently, albums from Lord Mantis and Cattle Decapitation wrecked my ears with collections of aural carnage that Werewolves looks to repeat with their latest here in 2021.
