If Alice In Chains recorded Facelift today it might sound like the modern Rawk classic that is The Balance of Nature Shifted by Melbourne’s Foot. Tapping into the pure, unfiltered and unfettered by outside money sound that Grunge started as, the latest from Foot is terrifically tantalizing and a must have in 2020.

A refreshing slab of intricately woven Doom, the latest from Australia’s Witchskull is a must listen in 2020. Mixing Sabbath-style darkness with the experimental nature of Desert Rawk legends like Kyuss, A Driftwood Cross is an evolution of Doom and an album that should set the bar for the genre going forward.

There’s a lot happening in the world right now so it’s great to have perspective. Sure, you can be bummed that a particular show isn’t happening or a movie isn’t coming out this year, or some sporting event is postponed but through perseverance we’ll get through this and some semblance of normalcy will return. Shows will happen again. Movie theaters will reopen. Sports will do sports in some big sports arena. Because in the immortal words of Ian Malcolm: “Life finds a way”

If you were ever curious, I listen to EVERYTHING that comes across my virtual desk. Doesn’t matter if it’s a genre I’m particularly invested in because in the interest of remaining objective to all, I say “What the hell!” and give it a shot. That said, I think I like Psychobilly??? I really dug the latest offering from BAT! last year and damn if the eighth record from Canadian trio The Brains doesn’t give me the feels as it delivers the solid goods. It also helps that both The Brains and BAT! share members.

Boston is lucky to have an artist like Dug McCormack. From Psychic Dog to BALUCHITHERIUM and more, he presents different facets of Boston Rawk. As a songwriter he’s explored a diverse variety of genres that merges the RAWK with fusion, jazz elements even and an all around experimental style wrapped in a cushy rawk and/or roll package for the people. And as a vocalist, McCormack continues that diverse trend with a style that constantly evolves and adapts which brings us to his latest project, Square Ape, and the brand new EP that just saw the light of day thanks to pent up creativity while stuck in the house (Thanks, pandemic?)

One of the more surprising comebacks recently has been the return of Industrial juggernaut Rorshach Test who made a name for themselves in the late ’90’s on Slipdisc Records with Unclean featuring the driving anthem “Satan” and their hyper-scorching cover of Berlin’s “Sex” being particular stand outs. As of late, they’ve been grinding away on their first new release in almost 20 years and teased that offering with singles “Done With Satan” and “Bottomless Dancer”.

Our favorite ghouls from Los Angeles return with a feisty new track that’ll have you shakin’ that thang and wishing you could leave the house to rawk the eff out in public. But you can’t! Yet. And in the meantime, we’re here to help give you the best soundtrack to shake your booty to indoors. And that playlist includes this fine new mammer jammer from Rx27.

We may have used the word “epic” a buttload of times when reviewing Loviatar’s last collection of recorded tunes so we’re going to come up with some different descriptors this time, okay? Like awesome. And monolithic. And gargantuan. And bold. And beautiful. But mostly masterpiece when it comes to Lightless and this band overall.

Per the press release for Viking, the upcoming new record by Chicago’s The Outfit, the quartet “isn’t re-inventing the wheel, and it never tries to; thats it’s charm”. That said, what they do deliver on Viking still stands out as easily one of the most anthemic Hard Rawk records of 2020.
