I’ll admit it. I was never into The Obsessed. And considering the bands that shaped my musical identity (Kyuss, in particular), it’s a pretty obvious oversight on my part that I never indulged in the sweet ear nectar that Scott “Wino” Weinrich and company were producing. But here we are, 30+ years after their formation and 13 years since their last studio opus and redemption on my part is at hand. [Read more…]
Second Still Fuse Post-Punk With DreamPop Spectacularly On Debut LP (Album Review)
Post-punk is a gem of a genre and it’s been going through a quiet resurgence as of late. Bands like The KVB, Vaniish, and The Soft Moon have been clearing a path for bands like Second Still to get some of that spotlight and and after hearing their self-titled debut, you’ll agree that spotlight is rightly deserved. [Read more…]
Life On Planet 9 Create A Whole New World Of Sound On Third LP Higher
I’m not going to sit here and pretend to know what the original vision of Life On Planet 9 was but after three albums, I’m hoping that I’m correct in saying that whatever that original vision was it’s been fully realized on their third full-length, Higher. [Read more…]
Blame Zeus Deliver Hard Rocking Soul On Sophomore Album Theory of Perception
The rock ‘n’ roll spirit of the Wilson sisters has been going through a resurgence as of late thanks to killer outings from Mlny Parsonz (Royal Thunder) and Nicole Estill (True Widow). One you may not have heard of, though, is vocalist Sandra Oliveira of Portugal’s Blame Zeus who even adds a bit of Mama Cass sass and soul to each hard rocker found on latest album, Theory of Perception. [Read more…]
Jacob Bannon Goes Solo With Wear Your Wounds (Album Review)
Take “Grim Heart/Black Rose” off of Converge’s No Heroes, expand it even more and structure an entire album out of it and you’ll have a small inkling of what Wear Your Wounds brings to the table. That’s, of course, oversimplifying the latest project from Jacob Bannon because just like the aforementioned song, WYW is a whole other musical journey unto itself. [Read more…]
Peter Murphy Strips Down Live On Latest Album Bare-Boned And Sacred
Live albums either suck or they don’t. There’s no gray area here. Your album either manages to truly capture that live energy, those different/updated versions of classics, and gives fans a sense of what it’s like to witness the performance in person (Or live it over and over again for someone who’s experienced it) or your album showcases cookie cutter versions of the songs with generic banter and crowd noise interspersed throughout the recording. End of story. [Read more…]
RIP Baddies, Long Live BAIT!
Back in the day (And on another blog), I used to do an annual post basically ripping apart Alternative Press’s “100 Bands You Need To Hear In _____” issue. Maybe ripped apart is a bit harsh so let’s say pointed out which of those 100 bands featured actually deserved some attention. Diamonds in the rough, if you will! [Read more…]
Wounded Giant Bring New Shades Of Doom And Gloom On Vae Victis
An epic six track slab of monolithic proportions, Wounded Giant’s Vae Victis embodies everything that can be great in the world of desert rawk. [Read more…]
Ghastly Sound Release Debut EP, Singlehandedly Save Rock And Roll In The Process
Like a mix of Torche and Kylesa’s brand of sludge rawk fronted by someone who can bring a Dickinsonian monster croon one minute and a brash growl the next, Ghastly Sound just might be the band to give current rawk and/or roll the swift kick in the ass it so desperately needs. [Read more…]
Bokassa Deliver A New “Stoner Anthem” And More On Divide & Conquer
Take the raw fury of Kyuss’ Wretch, mix it with the aesthetics of some of the greatest albums by Bad Religion and throw Andrew Schwab of Project 86 in front of the microphone and you’ll get a small inkling of what Norway’s Bokassa has to offer. [Read more…]
