The first thing long time listeners will notice about Dead Can Dance’s ninth album is how it just moves in a steady beat from start to finish with a renewed sense of urgency, driving forth that ethereal worldly sound propelled by Brendan Perry once again at the helm alongside musical partner Lisa Gerrard. Psychlona Does Desert Rawk Proud All The Way From Northern England On Fierce Mojo Rising
2018 is the year where we make an obscene amount of references to Kyuss. Which is not a bad thing! It just means that bands are FINALLY catching up to what the progenitors of modern desert rawk were all about. Case in point is the UK’s Psychlona who, despite a few similarities to the iconic Californian quartet, still stand on their own two feet with their latest offering Mojo Rising. [Read more…]
Domkraft Deliver A Deluge Of Dynamic Doom With Flood
Domkraft is the best Doom/Sludge out there today. Yep. It was said. By me. Just now. On Flood, they take all that kind of good stuff you get when you combine equal parts mysticism with good ole psychedelia and fuzz and wrap it in a desert rawk package to get the album you’ll eventually hear on October 19th. [Read more…]
Big Time Kill Shock and Awe On Stellar And Stunning Full-Length Debut
Thank Jeebus for bands like Big Time Kill out there who are representing for all us electro-loving freaks in the area because, let’s face it, when you think “Boston” and “Music Scene”, “Electro” is not the first genre that comes to mind. So on their debut full-length, Shock and Awe, BTK is here to put their unique stamp on the genre and hopefully pioneer the path for more like them to kickstart the scene in the area. [Read more…]
Pulp Rawk: Iron Maiden: Album By Album By Martin Popoff
Let’s get this out of the way first: I don’t like Iron Maiden. At all. In fact, in the great metal arguments of old I choose Megadeth over Metallica, Bush over Belladonna, and Judas Priest over Iron Maiden (Which is mentioned quite a bit in this book I’m about to mention). It’s just how I’m wired! That said, I respect the band and what they do. And even I can admit that “Number of the Beast” is a goddamn infectious metal anthem, although “Run to the Hills” still drives me bonkers. [Read more…]
Strvngers Dig Out Gothic Classics, Remix Their Own Classics On Exhumed Vol 2
Already gunning for our Top 5 of 2018, Strvngers make an even stronger case for their inclusion with their new “EP”, Exhumed Vol 2. And you didn’t read wrong, those quotes are NOT a typo. We only add them because of the sheer length of this release which includes five covers, five remixes, and a previously unreleased tune. Yeah, it’s big. [Read more…]
Untitled Movie Review Column: Halloween (2018)
Witty and paying homage to the original without being cheesy or tongue-in-cheek, Halloween (2018) is the sequel that fans of the series have been clamoring and yearning for. [Read more…]
Kenny Hickey: A Rock and Roll Fables Conversation
Watching a Silvertomb show, featuring former Type O Negative guitarist Kenny Hickey and drummer Johnny Kelly, is equally a transcendent and cathartic experience. Rounded out by Joseph James on guitar, Aaron Joos on keys, backing vocals, and guitar, and the indomitable Hank Hell and his fierce stage presence on bass, the sound is simply massive. A sum of all its’ parts, Silvertomb is a Doom outfit in the vein of Type O Negative with Kelly’s thunderous drumming alongside Hickey’s signature riffs and uncanny voice. [Read more…]
Replicant Support The ACLU And The People On The Resistance
Replicant is back just in time to sonically save the world…or at least deliver a message that not only is resistance definitely NOT futile during these trying times but also encouraged! [Read more…]
forktie Release Debut EP Of Supercharged Rawk!
We’ve definitely mentioned two things in these pages before: 1) Surprise new music is the best new music and B) Hot damn are we proud of the local scene in the Boston area! This post covers both of those things as local outfit forktie follows their debut single from earlier in the year with the just dropped debut EP. [Read more…]
