Domkraft’s third full-length is filled with colossal sounds made up some of the gnarliest, most nasty sounding riffs that Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler wished they’d discovered first. Cap off all that inherent Heavy with an exquisite musicianship throughout and Seeds is easily a contender for many a year-end best list. Including ours.

Coming at listeners like a sonic 18 wheeler barreling full speed towards a brick wall, ÆGES’ latest single is a promising taste of what’s to come from the Los Angeles-based quartet. Fresh off last year’s DrØmmen record (Which we reviewed here), ÆGES return with a massive pummeler that’s like Mastodon doing Arena Rawk and just what we needed to hear at this very moment in time.

Firstly, if you don’t know the genius of Have A Nice Life or Black Wing (Both featuring Dan Barrett) yet then you really oughta stop everything you’re currently doing, track down any of their numerous recordings over the years, and just soak it all in. Done? Okay, then onto our second point which is simply that Lauren Lakis is a similar kind of genius as evidenced by her recent slew of singles culminating in one truly divine debut full-length (Which we reviewed here). Put these two together in the form of Lakis covering a deep cut by Have A Nice Life and the results are, you guessed it: Genius!

BIG | BRAVE do epic Rawk really, really well. Or more specifically, the core trio of Tasy Hudson, Mathieu Ball, and Robin Wattie do Sludge, Post-Metal, and Doom really, really well. Actually, any genre that BIG | BRAVE decide to tackle they do really, really well. And on Vital, their fifth full-length, BIG | BRAVE has conjured up one of their most memorable records to date and easily one of the most magically monolithic magnum opuses of the year.

Everything happens in cycles, yeah? Music especially is this glorious living organism that goes through changes, reboots styles, and then goes somewhere new and even more exciting. Right now, there seems to be a resurgence of a lot of the sub-genres that made the ’90’s stand out with Grunge/Alternative and Nu-Metal making another go at trending in the now. Looking For A Light, the latest offering from Los Angeles’ Tombstones In The Eyes, dwells in the former category and focuses most of its’ energy toward that Jesus Jones, Lush, shoegaze aesthetic to give listeners something fresh yet familiar.

My experience with the legendary Cannibal Corpse is owning/enjoying the only album (so far) by Serpentine Dominion, the supergroup that features CC vocalist George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher (Along with Shannon Lucas of The Black Dahlia Murder and Killswitch Engage’s Adam D) and that’s it. So stating that I’m a Cannibal Corpse noob is a vast understatement, okay? As a lifelong Metalhead, though, I respect the hell out of the legacy and, while I can’t recite “Devoured By Vermin” from memory, I sure as shit appreciate their continued existence especially when it comes to their latest, Violence Unimagined.

Of the few highlights that did come in 2020, the emergence of some truly stellar music both from staples and emerging artists proved to be a godsend during those trying times. A little bit of a staple because of the mileage of its’ members throughout the industry but still a relatively newer artist, AshenMoon arrived during the pandemic with a new school funkified Rawk that balanced a perfect amount of Soul and Blues while still packing a punch and are continuing to surge with their latest single, the self-titled “Ashen Moon”.

Concept albums done right kick some serious ass. And One Hundred Thousand’s ZODIAC does just that as it explores traits of the signs presented within each track throughout the twelve songs here. It’s never a good thing when looking over a draft for an upcoming review and see that there are no less than four different kinds of intros in various stages of done-ness. Meaning that an album is SO GOOD that we can’t decide how to approach it. Do we wanna be supah serious? Do we want to be all witty and insightful? Do we want to suck up because what’s within is just THAT GOOD? Or do we want to do what we did here and do some sort of combination of it all to stress the fact that what you’re about to read about (And hopefully listen to) is fucking important while still keepin’ it loose.

The Lion’s Daughter is releasing an album in 2021 that has got to be one of the easy stand out’s as of late. It’s kind of Hardcore and kind of Black Metal (Think Satyricon). It’s also a lot ’80’s and a lot synth-heavy. It’s actually a lot of all around Heavy in general. Skin Show, the third album from the St. Louis-based trio, is weird and wonderful with a melding of sounds that shouldn’t work but emphatically do in a grand and mesmerizing fashion on an album that creates an atmosphere…scratch that, a whole new world…that’s a huge heaping helping of cerebral Metal.
